6.5 x 284 156 gr Berger for Moose

I just booked a cancelation Moose hunt. I leave on Sun the 29th of Sept. Anyone shoot the Berger 156 gr 6.5 x 284 on Moose? I will be Bear and Wolf hunting. I have a 300 Wby Mag and 7MM Rem Mag I could dig out to shoot

I have shot them with a 300 Winchester and 165 gr Hornady Interlocks.

Im curious how that bullet will do myself. I have it loaded in a 6.5 prc but yet had the chance to pull the trigger on anything.

A friend of mine dropped a bull moose with one shot here in Canada with his 6.5x284 and a 140 VLD Hunting bullet at around 300 yards a few years back. I was with him.

There has been many Moose shot with 30-30 170gr Silvertip. And 270 130 gr and 30-06 150gr. I really think the 156 gr Berger would be a good bullet. I loaded up some today with H-1000 and 57.3 gr and they shot real good.

I shot a 60" Alaskan moose with my Cooper 6.5-284. I used (2) Nosler 140 Partitions and then the bull turned to face me. Third shot was a Berger 140 VLD and the bull dropped at the shot. Good Luck with your hunt!

I’ve filled three moose tags, one big bull and two small bulls. My experience has been moose can’t take the punishment a mature bull elk can. Let an elk get his adrenaline going and he will get have way across the state on one lung, half a liver and three legs. The moose hunts I’ve been apart of are different, I’ve never seen one just drop where it stood. They have such big mass they can absorb the hit but after that they don’t go far, take a few steps or stand there get wobbly and drop. I used a 270 for two with 130 partitions and a 338 with 210 partitions for the one pictured. I think the Berger 156 out of a 6.5-284 will do just fine. Just don’t take a Texas heart shot. A lot of Alaskan friends use much less than that and fill their freezer every year.

My favorite game meat by far, from North America anyways. Good luck on your hunt!

Just curious, why the different bullet for the third shot?

I had a sheep tag and also hoped for the opportunity to shoot more wolves ( I had shot 5 the year before in the same area). I sent the two partitions into the lungs and the bull was still standing. Third shell in the elastic shell holder of the single shot rifle was a VLD. My buddy was an outfitter in Alaska for 25 years and had countless clients use his 7mm Mag with 168 grain VLD's for moose. The VLD always performed well.

After the two lung shots he was dead on his feet.

IF, you've ever Gutted, a Big Game Animal AFTER, a Berger, "Boiler Room" Hit, take a Look inside, the Diaphragm !
Usually, the Heart & Lung's ARE turned to, Jello !
VERY Hard to, survive,.. THAT !
Some Hunters, have found that, the 156 grain, Berger, is NOT quite, as "Explosive" as,. the 140's.
