6.5 STW

Hey Guys,
I am going to build a 6.5 STW in a Shilen 28 inch 1 in 8 twist rifle. I cannot find much info on this certian round. Have any of you all loaded one before? I hope to use a 7 STW type S die and a few smaller bushings to get the neck down to the proper size. Have you all tried this method any? Thanks Croberts

I tried this approach with a similar situation, and it did not work at all. The neck is smaller, but all of the shoulder or neck-shoulder junction is not sized properly. I would not recommend this approach or the round, but whatever trips your trigger.

I appreciate the advice. I have never tried to do it, do not know wheater it will work. I can see where the sholder will get messed up.

look for starting loads in some articles on the 6.5-300 Weatherbey,or quick load

This link should help with some starting loads but I hope you are not counting on a very long barrel life because I tried it a while back and it is a burner. http://www.reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=118

I have a .243 STW, .257 RUM, and a 6.5 RUM. They all shoot great. I have had the 6.5 RUM the longest and probably have about 200-250 rounds down the tube and so far no troble. Its a great long range deer round. I have shot some 120gr. BTs at 1000 yards with great accuracy. In the 6.5 RUM I use WC 872 and Fed. 215M primers.

They are all fun to shoot and super flat. If they don't last too long, thats ok with me as long as they don't quit making barrels.

What kind of velocity are you seeing with the 120 BT? What about accuracy?

Accuracy is less than half inch groups at 100 with a velocity of 3850fps. If I do my part it will shot 1/4" or less groups at this velocity. I was shooting a few weeks ago at 100 yards and a small lizzard showed up on the target-you guessed it-I nailed him.

I am not a great longrange shooter and the gun still holds around half MOA out to 1000yards.

Croberts, if you want a high velocity rig, look at Richards 300 Varminter. It pushes a 125grn BT at 4050fps and the 110grn V-Max at 4150fps. Look at his web page; Richard's Custom Rifles. There is a good blog, on 6mmBR.com, about the 300 Varminter. Not only is it fast, it's super accurate too.

I would like to have one of those, but I have a long magnum action and I already bought the bbl. I am thinking the 6.5 STW will work good, I just have some work to do once I get it built.
Thanks, he does have a sweet gun.

The 6.5 STW will work awesome once you get it going. The 6.5 120grn Nosler Ballistic Tip with the right twist rate and barrel length would be an awesome varmint set up. If you want to get more information about the 6.5 STW, I would go to the following site; LongRangeHunting.com.

I push moly'd Sierra 6.5mm 155MK's #9570 out of a 30" 1:8.5"twist Bbl,chambered in a .295"tight necked 6.5/300RSAUM at 3250fps.
Accuracy is amazing/boring,built around a Barnard P-O2 action-Thanks Alan & Dan Warner.
Shorter more efficient case than the 6.5-284 & pushes heavier bullets with ease.
With a 100yd zero & 17.25 minutes of elevation is my 1K zero.
