6.5 lapua

shot my lapua build today for first time. mixed results. last 3 shots looked prettty good. brass looks like it's taking a beating already. round marks on base like there is excessive pressure. only shooting 35.3 grains of reloader 15 with 123 a-max. didn't chrono yet. first 5 shots out of brand new barrel. I heard some people shooting 38 grains?????? going to clean barrel and shoot next 5 shots. thinking about toning them down a bit. I'm thinking I should probably take my chrono up for the next 5 shots cause it blows my mind I'd be getting that high of pressure with 35.3 grains. It didn't knock out primers and didn't kick at all but geez not sure what do do next.

Toby, You're a couple of forums low but who's counting. ;)
Does seem kinda low and we know they are all different, yada yada yada. RE15 is definitely on the fringe of the fast side but then again so is Varget, which I use with the 123's. Just means your load density won't be 100% and also can get a little unpredictable when approaching maximum loads, read mild to wild real quick! The chrono you mentioned should shed more light.

Perhaps someone will move it up the Forum list into the right spot .... ;)

Don't know about the comment that Varget is too fast, have RE15 but not tried myself. RE15 has been suggested to me to try with the heavier 140gr Bullets by my Mentor.

I'm new to Benchrest Shooting here "Down Under" in Oz ... also to 6.5x47 Lapua but I have two outfits I'm load testing with.

The main competition rig is based on a Stolle Grizzly II and 29" 1:8 Pac-Nor NBRSA profile barrel. PT&G Reamer, .250" Lead and .286" tight neck. Scope is a March-X 8-80x56mm.

My load is on the bottom accuracy node of velocity, 37.4gr Varget, seated 0.002" off the lands, neck tension less than 0.005", BR4 Primers, velocity 2860fps, ES=8, SD=2.46 using 130gr Berger VLD. Varget is made here as ADI's AR2208 powder.

Test target at 200 yards, overall group size 0.350" minus calibre of 0.264" = 0.086" ...shot by one of Aussie's best. My groups are more like 0.171" @ 200 yards and the training I am doing at present over 550 Yards (500 Metres) with wind have given me 1.5" to 2.0" consistant groups... I need to learn how to read wind better to tighten the groups up.

It's early days for me and I'm sure I can do much better with practise but I'll be sticking with the 130gr Berger's for awhile.

I have been hunting and varminting at medium distances, 300 Yards odd for over 40 years but punching paper accurately is a different kettle.

I moved it to the other one also. I'm not sure. I backed it off slightly by .5 grains to see what that does. probably fire 5 more shots tuesday if I get a chance. I'm at by means not capable of that kind of accuracy. I'm hoping for inch groups at 265 yards.

It is a challenge and by asking a friend who is a very experienced long range shooter I got to see what is possible.

This is the group, the squares are 1" and the single shot to the bottom was a sighter, the rest is the group at 200 Yards. The best I can do is about twice the size at 0.175" centre to centre. At least I know the firearm and this load is capable of repeating this.

As you can see there was a slight breeze from right to left, about a half hour from sunset and early winter this way.

Re: 6.5 lapua With 22/250 Remington brass

I thought that you guys might like to know my results of using 22/250 brass in this 6.5x47. Using new Rem 22/250 brass, I necked up to 6mm, then 25, then 6.5 using Kliendorst long tapered expanders.

Next, I ran the brass in the full length sizer and set the headspace, then trimmed for length, put a heavy chamfer on the case mouth inside and out.

Next, using 9.0g of Bullseye topped off with cream of wheat, I fire formed the case to 95 % fire from. Next, using R#15 and 123g Sierra's, and Federal 210's, I simply worked up a load. Within 25 shots total, I am shooting .250 groups and smaller at 200 yards, I shot one group on Friday in the 1's. I quit shooting competition quite some time ago, this cartridge is really something else.

I got tired of waiting on Lapua's delivery with a brand new rifle.
