6.5 jap rechambered to 26 nosler?

I have had a nice 6.5 jap arisaka laying around for years. Recently have taken a interest to the 26 nosler. I have a excellent shooting 6.5 grendel. I am looking into buying a reamer and rechambering the jap rifle in 26 nosler. I have some homework to do but any reason it would not work? need to check bolt face dimensinos etc. Arisaka actions are known to be very strong actions? I also need to check barrel twist: etc. If any of you have any insight, I would appreciate your input? Thanks

After few minutes of research barrel twist looks compatible. 26 nosler is 1 in 8. And 6.5 jap is 1 in 9 , but jap barrel is 32 inch and standard for 26 nosler is 26 inches. Tomorrow I will see if bolt face has enough spare material so I can machine it off to work with larger 26 nosler case. If so I think I am in business.

Very limited experience here with those rifles. I've bore scoped a few of those and the barrels were in pretty rough shape. Have you had the chance to scope your barrel?

Good shooting

Chamber a 6.5 Jap to 26 Nosler???...

..Ol' man Nosler will spin in his grave ;) ;) ;)

NO! NO! DOUBLE NO! Do not chop up a piece of history. Right now if that rifle is in full military dress it is worth twice what a new 26 wizzbang cost to a collector. Get you a used Savage 110 and order you a finished barrel in what ever caliber you want and you can change the bolt head to what ever size you need. It is a big boys tinker toy. As a side note just get you a 28 inch or if you prefer longer barrel in 264 Win mag and it will do anything real world not selling hype the 26 Nosler will do. Cases are cheaper and easier to get or make. Just run a 7mm Rem mag case in a 264 Win mag FL size die. It takes less powder and dies are easier to come by. Retumbo makes my27 3/4" barrel 264 Win mag ROCK 3350 fps Actual average chronoed velocity with 130 Accubonds.

The receivers were strong compared to other military receivers of that time .
The barrels are another story , 1st your cartridge will be too long for the jap barrel breech (diam is too short , barrel is not of enough diam . For chamber of new case ) barrel is of mild steel not 4140 . 2nd do not ruin a piece of history , sell it and start with a modern receiver . 3rd it would have to be a single shot , even if you decide to use it with a modern barrel .
I have , sad to say , sporterized many japs . I still have 2 that I shoot , a 6 mm rem with a douglas xx and a 22-250 . I too thought how strong they were , they were , compared to other military receivers of that time , they were case hardened carbon steel of good design . Not meant for todays magnums .
Just my 2 cents

thanks for all the feedback folks. first no it isnt full military dress, some moron cut the stock forend off to try and sporter it. it is a last ditch as the flower is filed off! i had not yet gave thought to the chamber length of barrel. yes it has been scoped and safe to shoot 6.5 jap. I love my 6.5 grendel and while i beleive the 26 nosler will be a total barrel burner, it would be a fun hunting round? I do find it interesting 6.5 jap barrel twist etc, is so comparable. Amazing, what new low drag bullet tech and propellent technology has done to modern day cartrages. Of course all be it a larger diameter case holding more propellant as well. i need to do some more homework. Maybe I should sell the jap gun and use the funds for a build? I didnt think it was worth anything! Im willing to trade for a mauser 98 large ring action!

The defaced crest means it was surrendered not captured. The 6.5 jap is about the same capacity as 6 BR . See how accurate you can get the original 6.5 .
ER Shaw still installs barrels for these at a reasonable price .
Good luck, Gary

The 6.5 Jap is ~25% larger than the BR cases.

Catshooter , are you going by Lee case cap ? Or act measuring ? At some pt not too long ago I had fired jap brass and wanted to see . Anyway I was comparing apples to oranges , I was using cap with the jap heavy long bullet seated fairly deep to the Br usinf 70 gr flat base .
I do agree if using Lee's case cap # the diff is about 25 . Lees # are sometimes questionable , look at his 357 to 38 sp ? I know the 357 is thicker in the web .

I am not going by Lee... I do nothing by Lee. It just plain case capacity. It is not realistic to measure one case with a light FB bullet, and another by sticking a long bullet down deep into a case - by that standard, you can make any case larger or smaller, and it becomes impossible to compare cases.

Thats why I said apples to oranges , and how did you measure , I used an orig Jap case , bullet , not norma . Again how ?

I personally would not even consider chambering the cartridge you spoke of I don't care how strong the action is it is not practical at all.

Why would anyone use an Original Jap case for anything - they haven't been made in 70 years??

Unless, of course, you are comparing it to a 6mmBR cases made in 1944 ;) ;) ;)

Folks take it easy! Wow! First off I need not anyone to rebarrel if I decide to do so, I will do the work myself, tie it down and fire it with a long rope 40 times or so. Thanks for the imput but getting a bit off on a tangent arnt we?
