6.5 Grendel vs 264 LBC vs 6.5 BPC

What are the differences in these three cartridges besides the names? Is it the brass dimensions? The shoulder angle? The size primers they use? If anyone can comment, thanks. I have only been able to find info on the Grendel.

The first two are essentially the exact same cartridge.

The main difference in the Grendel and the LBC is the neck diameters and the throat angles. The rest of the chamber is the same.... The BPC on the other hand has different headspace and a few other chamber differences. If I remember correct the BPC uses the same throat angles as the LBC. I have prints for all three if needed... Matt

chuckbuster243, if I understand what you're saying is that the Grendel brass (Lapua) will not work in the LBC (Hornady) or vise-versa. So does the throat angle determine the style and length of the bullet used?

No it will work... The Grendel uses a compound throat that is optimized for several bullet weights and profiles. The LBC has a 1.5 degree standard throat. I cant remember what freebore length that is on it off my head. I have built a custom chambered boltgun with a combination of the two that has .123k freebore and is perfect for the 123 and even the 107 class of bullets. As well as a .295 neck. The true Grendel is a .300 and the LBC has a .297 neck. My Lapua brass loads out at depending on lot around .290-.291 and reformed 7.62x39 RP at .289 as well as Hornady. Their were back in the day some chambers that had troubles chambering but that has been resolved. Keep a close eye on seating depth though. Just because a particular bullet is mag length does not mean it is not way in the rifling that is, at least on AR15's. I will send the prints in the am and you can see the differences. Are you planning a boltgun or AR15? Matt

Matt, I am building a bolt gun, 26" 8T on a Savage target action. I'm not sure which reamer they are using but I have been looking at the 107gr and 120gr Sierra's. According to the print you sent me the freebore length is 0.135". As I was looking over all the prints you sent I think I found an error with the 6.5 BPC. The print states the 6.5 BPC is longer then the Grendel and LBC but MIdwayUSA states the Forster headspace gages as being the same for all three.

Differences are all ahead of the shoulder, so gauges'll work in all three. Freebore @ leade profile are different with each design.

I would go off the print before midway. But that being said I would call Dave Kiff at pt&g first. I think the BPC is longer but I will take a look... You need the chamber I currently use in my savage. I will email it in the morning. I is the cats meow for the 107-123 grain bullets.

My next rifle will be chambered for the 243 LBC Turbo. Already have the reamer and GO gauge. I chose the 243 version because I think the Grendel's case capacity is better suited for the smaller 6mm bullets. Just personal preference though...

I thought about doing one in 6mm. I Think in a ar15 it would be great. I just like the 123 6.5 bullets in a boltgun better. whats the chamber, bullet, load combo in your gun? Matt

It is! A couple other fellows did this early on, Robert Whitley III with his 6mmAR & AR-Turbo, then Greg Krebaum with his 6RAT. Later variation on the latter's the FATRAT. Fine choice for spaceguns.

The 6mm AR Turbo is the same as the 243 LBC Turbo...almost.

Difference is that the 6mm AR Turbo is designed for the AR rifle and the original designer has a "patent" on the reamer and dies so you can only have him chamber your rifle or but dies from him. Supposedly the round works great in AR-15 rifles.

In light of this, Les Baer called "BULLSH*T" on the whole idea. Les hated the idea that the public didn't have access to that design so he ever so slightly modified the design to not infringe on the patent and called it the 243 LBC (Les Baer Custom) Turbo.

Anyhow, the gun is not built yet. Still a thought in the back of my head. All I have is the reamer and GO gauge. I modified the reamer a bit to have a slightly longer neck at .269" and throated it for the Berger 105 VLD's. I have no doubt that whatever I build it on, she'll be a shooter
