6.5 Grendel or 224 Valkyrie

Going to do a AR15 build and was wondering which you would build. Seeing how the current Political climate is towards AR's thought it might be a good time, this will definitely get shot probably a lot, and used for some white tail deer. This is my first AR build so suggestions are welcome.

The Grendel is really fun and accurate and more than enough gun for deer. Several bullets work well for deer but I like the 127 gr Barnes LRX the best. AR Comp is a go to powder. Faxon makes a very accurate barrel.

The safer pick "right now" is the Grendel. 224V is still in it's infancy with sorting out to do.

A year or two from now???...

Thanks guys I was leaning toward the Grendel, use to be here in NC that you couldn't hunt deer with a 22 cal. was told that has changed waiting to hear back from my local enforcement officer.

I was faced with the same choice a month or so ago.....I went with the Grendel and am glad I did. You see, even before my AA Grendel upper got here I found a good deal on a 6mmAR upper.....which is the 6.5 G necked down to 6mm. I've yet to wring them both out but initial indications are that they are going to be more than adequate for their intended purposes......The 6.5 G will be my coyote hunting rig and the 6mmAR will be used mostly for target shooting of various types. The next project will probably be a 6.5 Grendel necked down to .224 caliber, which is very similar to the Valkyrie.

Quality Grendel brass is plentiful and the 6.5mm bullets are the bee's knee's ballistics wise. If targets and the occasional big game were in the mix I'd definitely opt for the bigger bullet.

Don't know enough to say about 224 Valkyrie, but I do have a 6.5 grendel and absolutely love it, took coyotes out to 300 yards and drop them on the track. A friend of mine took a couple of bucks at 300 yards all with one shot.

My next project is get a bolt action rifle either in 6.5 grendel or 6mm creedmoor, decision and decision?

Valkyrie appears to be more specialize round with limited bullet selection, Grendel has a nice range of available bullets. The areas where the Valkyrie out proforms the grandel is pretty much splitting hairs, certainly not enough to give up the bullet selection.

I've got 2 Grendels. Actually 1 is a .264 LBC and the other is a Grendel. Basically the same thing as the cartridges interchange. Can't say about the other cartridges but the ones I have are very accurate. Haven't killed anything but a bobcat and it was drt. Very pleasant and accurate round to shoot. I've got a bolt and AR and the AR shoots as good or better than the bolt gun. The bolt shoots awful good too.

I have been through the same decision. Went with 6.5 Grendel. I bought an OdenWorks 18" barrel that came with tunable gas block, gas tube and complete bolt and carrier for $440 and built me a rifle. The Oden barrels are SS hand lapped and are shooters, guaranteed under 1 MOA. Mine shoots about anything you put in it under 1" @ 100. 120-23 gr bullets 2500ish fps is one deer/hog killing machine. I would caution you about falling into getting a Bear Creak Arsenal Upper or barrel because of the low cost. They are a crap shoot as to getting one that will shoot better than 2 or 3 inch groups. Don't ask me how I know, LOL. Sometimes you need to learn things the had way is guess.

There is really no contest on performance between those two. The 6cm will walk all over the 6.5g, especially for kE on fur.

Those 6.5 Grendels are pretty amazing. Far better choice for deer, I think. I have one I built with a 24" Krieger barrel after first buying an Alexander Arms upper. I wasn't pleased so much with the accuracy so built this one. Turns out both are VERY accurate, but I have found that they must be on the money with the load they like - because they can dislike a lot. Not a forgiving round to load as I have read others claim them to be - at least not with the two I have. That said, I'm looking at a nifty .261" 5-shot 100-yard group fired with the Krieger-barreled rig. Hard not to like that. I have a .22 Nosler, similar to the Valkrie - though where I live - the .22 is a no-go on legal deer hunting. No doubt, though, the Valkyrie, especially with a Barnes TSX bullet, would be good medicine for deer. If I had a choice, I'd opt for the Grendel. Better availability of brass and loaded ammo if need be. More knock-down power.

+1 for the 6.5 Grendel although I would also like to have a 6mm Grendel. My aa and custom 6.5 both shoot very well. I can't see any advantage going to the 224v as far as a hunting round. As a benchrest round I think there are better candidates than either cartridge out there
