6.5 Grendel Loads

Looking for a couple of good recipes for a 6.5 Grendel bolt gun. I want to shoot the 105, 106 and 107's. Thanks, Brad

H-335 AND THE 107 WILL WORK OR IT DOES FOR ME NEVER SEEN A 6.5 105GR OR 106 GR BULLET JUST SAYING I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY

I run 28.2 grains of 8208 XBR under my 105 grain Cavity Back MKZs in my Grendel. It is giving me right at 2600 FPS in my 24" Encore barrel. You could probably push it up to almost 29 grains, depending on your build.

I have ran a couple of Grendels now one in an AR and the other a Howa mini. Both preferred H4895 over anything else with bullet weights from 85-123.

The 6.5 Grendel Forum has sections devoted to favourite loads for both bolt and gas guns and is well worth visiting for tips. The cartridge's designer, Bill Alexander throws his suggestions into this ring among many others and if anyone is going to have a good idea for likely recipes, it'd have to be him! IIRC, he suggests Ramshot Tac and 107/108s as a starting point.

My Howa 'Mini' doesn't care for the Lapua 108 (yet to try the 107 SMK), and has preferred 120/123gn bullets to date. (Covid has stopped testing sadly, so little to no progress in taking things further this year.) With a 120, my best results have come from Viht N133, but this would likely be a bit too bulky for 107/8s. (It produces a moderately compressed load with 120/123s.) Tac has come second and I keep upping loads as they've proven milder than predicted in both published loads data and through QuickLOAD. Even so, it has given me better velocities than N133 or similar.

Bill Alexander makes an interesting point on 65grendel.com about the cartridge being very primer sensitive. He recommends trying as many models as possible once you find a promising bullet-powder combination.

STOMP442, Did you like the Howa Mini, and the 6.5 Grendel round in general? The reason I was asking is Brownell’s has a a 20 inch barreled action on sale that I thought would make a nice truck gun. Then of course the 6ARC conversion comes to mind as more gunsmiths get reamers to chamber this round. Thanks.

I like the action and caliber a lot. I picked it up because I though it would make a fantastic truck gun as well. So far it has only killed a couple jack rabbits but it's worked like a champ.

I have to agree with Laurie on the Ramshot Tac in the Grendel....Is my favorite powder in this caliber combo.
Shoots light's out in my 20 inch barrel.

I salvaged an AR 15 6.5 Grendel from a 6.5x47 take off bolt gun barrel. No load work just grabbed load from errornet. 31.4 2000 MR looks very promising. Plenty good for hog busting.

Groups at 3 and 9, the POA were the #8.

I used benchmark under smk 107gr, that worked wonders and isn't temp sensitive, or from what the manufacture says its not. I don't shoot 107 often, I load for both my swede and Grendel so I meet in the middle at 123gr. Benchmark works well for that, only cause I'm using it up but, but it really shined at 107gr.

I'm shooting Speer 90 gr. TNT for targets. I bought a few hundred about $0.19 a piece. For hunting, I don't know why anyone would splatter lead into their food. The 100 gr Barnes TTSX solves the problem. I think it is the best 6.5mm bullet for hunting anything up to Elk, and I think for Elk, Moose and larger ungulates, the Grendel is not the best choice. If I'm wrong about the 100 gr TTSX being the best for deer, antelope, sheep, and goats, show me why. I'm loading H335 powder and using Fiocchi ZP SRM primers. I consider the result with a 90 gr TNT a "utility load." If I were chasing more precision I would look at 8208 and 107 or 108 gr scenars or TMK's.
