6.5 dasher anyone?

thinking about ordering a benchmark 3 groove 5R 8.5" twist in .264/.256. was thinking of trying a 6.5 dasher since i already have a bunch of 6BR lapua brass. will set it up to shoot the 130 berger vlds. any thoughts would be appriciated.

I see no reason not to try it, The added bore dia., should make the barrel last longer. The 108 and maybe the 123 should fly good.......jim

Cole.
Like jim, I can't see any real downside. I think the prospects for success are high and you have lots of good alternatives if it doesn't work out. I think the prospects are good because I was able to obtain excellent results shooting 115 VLDs out of my 6mmBR out to 1000 yards. I know that's not supposed to work but it did. In addition, the Sierra manual shows loads for the 6.5 BR with bullets up to the 142gr MK.

With the added capacity of the Dasherized case, I see no reason why you couldn't get the 123 grain bullets up to reasonable velocities as long as the throat is long enough to get the shank out in the neck and the twist is right.

If it doesn't work, you can always run a 6.5X47 reamer with the same or larger neck diameter right over top of the Dasher chamber and that case is know to work extremely well with that class of bullets.
Sounds like a great idea.

thanks for the replies. i ran some loads over my knights bulletflight ballistic program. a 130 berger vld at 2850 had 3 moa less drop than my 6BR load--105 berger hunting vld with 30.3 varget and wolf srm at 2906 fps--at 600 yards. there really is no downside to trying this out. cost is about the same as the 6BR. plus, with only about 500 rounds down the tube of my krieger, i can always screw it back on when i want

For an "fun gun" project, it might be o.k., but compared to what a 6mm Dasher will spit out with 6mm 105-108 gr bullets, the 6.5 project with 130 VLD's will be anemic.

i have read others shooting the 6.5 BRX with 130s and getting over 2850 fps with it. also, on this site, the 6.5 grendel shooting the 130 jlks at over 2750 fps with n530 and tac

I read what you have written, but in my eyes it's not just about how much velocity someone can get push it to, it's where you can get consistent accuracy and how fast can you realistically push things and stay consistently accurate. I don't see a consistently accurate 2850 fps with the 130's being reasonably attainable (heck that's getting up there with some of the 6.5 x 47 Lapua and .260 Rem size cases), nor 2750 fps with the 130's out of a 6.5 Grendel either (in my work with the Grendel, the 130's were good in the 2500-2600 fps range). There's a lot of velocity talk on forum threads and a lot of that vanishes quickly when you get your chronograph out at the range and actually start working with the barrel and chamber you have on your rifle.

Just my 2 cents FWIW.

thank you. i may end up doing a 6br-dx--i have wanted to try that for a while now. might try a 7.5" twist for the 115s

i have used a lot of benchmark barrels and love them but if they can make a "3 groove 5R" rifled barrel, they are even better than i thought.

i meant to leave out the 5, sorry. i guess 3R would be more appropriate. i am so used to saying 5R. are you shooting a 3R benchmark?

I'm not impressed with a Bart 5 R right now, i have a Brux 4 groove that feels a lot smoother and cleans easer and shoots as good or better than the other 2. We will see by the end of the year....jim

Cole, I have a number of Dashers and i use the trimmed and pointed 115 DTAC.@ ave. of 2925 es is any where from 3-9 and it does well at 1K. I can go a lot faster RL-17 but RL-15 shoots in the low 1's.......jim

I have a 6.5BR, it's has 40 degree shoulder, with very little taper.
I rechambered a 6.5x284 barrel with 1400+ rounds to it. I shot myself into Master class in F-class 600 yds with this gun. And it's a Ruger. I have had this chamber for about 10 years and very happy with it. I shoot mostly 140 gr. Hornadys. This chamber has been used in Silhouette shooting also.

Lower these load by 10% to be safe.
My Max. load 33.0 of Varget Horn 140 Vel. = 2663
My Max. load 32.0 BC2 Sierra 123 Vel. = 2608
My Max. load 28.0 Acc2520 Horn. 129 Vel. = 2331
I think the barrel is 22 inches long.
