6.5 Creedmoor

Thinking about 6.5 ar creedmoor build. What pros and cons come to mind re: 6.5 round? Initially i'm concerned about quality and availability of brass. Interested in user's opinions. Want to use in high power local matches.

hornady brass is not bad at all.

The 6.5 round is great. I think it would be a great 600 yard round if it is in 6.5 creedmoor or 6.5x47. If your concern is good brass, then look at the 6.5x47. 1000 yard is okay if it is in the right cartridge that is more suited for 1000 yards such as the 260AI, 6.5x55 swede and 6.5x284. If you want to go 6mm, then the 6 dasher is great. if you want to go 7mm, then the 284, 284 Shehane and 7 RSAUM are the top choices in the 7mm class.

6.5 Creedmoor will require the larger and heavier AR10 frame. What you want is a 6.5 Grendel, which was designed for the AR 15. It's advertised as a 200-800 yard round, but will reach 1000.

Lapua makes 6.5 Grendel brass. Les Baer makes an excellent air gauged match barrel (264 LBC) as does Lowther Walther (6.5 CSS). Both come with bolts. Of courses if you want to save $200, there are cheaper alternatives, but this is Accurate Shooter. Grendel mags are common and I believe (but don't quote me one this) they are the same as 6.8 SPC mags.

Creedmoor vs Grendel is like 30-06 vs 308. Grendel is the smaller frame, more barrel choices, and Lapua brass.

It's a great round for highpower. That's pretty much what it was designed for. I'm assuming by highpower you mean "across the course" or midrange with a sling and irons? If so, I can recommend it. I shoot one at 600 yard prone matches and have shot many high X count cleans with it. Brass is holding up well so far, loading is pretty easy. You don't have to push it hard to get great performance on a prone target. The hornady factory ammo is cheap and it will clean at 600. Lots of known good loads for it.

Hornady Creedmoor brass is good stuff, like anything the harder you lean on it the faster it'll wear out. Given that you're talking a gas gun, I doubt you'll be running enough pressure to cause substantial primer pocket issues.

+1, love my 6.5 creedmoor AR. I have a basic DPMS upper 24" barrel and I shoot it in our local MR f-class (600y). Other than being in f-open, I've enjoyed it. Expect to find an accurate load that is good on the rifle at less than max. My load has been 39.8gr 4350 for a 142smk. Sorry, no chrono data but feeds well and shoots well. Polish the feed ramps on the barrel extension to reduce scratching, and apply a stick-on Velcro square to the deflecter and the brass will be just fine.

PS, reload #7 and still going.

Hornady brass has varied considerably from lot to lot. If you are a reloader and want the best accuracy then go with a 6.5x47L its much more accurate. I have yet to meet anyone with both that will say their Creedmoor outshoots the Lapau. There is a really good article on the 6.5x47 here.

Totally agree. I don't know anyone shooting 1K F-Class with a Creedmoor. I know many guys using 6.5x47L. Just ask our very own Erik Cortina. He's at the F-Class Nationals this week in Phoenix, so he may be slow to respond.

Norma and Nosler are making 6.5 Creedmoor brass, and Winchester is making factory loaded ammo - Hornady brass is your only choice anymore.

Who cares. Its not as accurate as the 6.5x47. We are obsessed with accuracy here. Lol ;D
