6.5 Creedmoor, small vs large primers

I am setup to reload 6.5 with brass that accepts large rifle primers. But lapua brass states small primers are more accurate on that cartridge. Has anybody tested match quality primers large and small on 6.5?

lapua 6.5 creedmoor has small rifle primer pockets. it also has a small flashole. can't use a standard decapping pin. make sure you remember that.

cci br4's work great.

Found that out a while back myself, had to file down Lee universal decapprec die pin to work on lapua brass

I use the Mighty Armory universal decapper for Peterson Rem 260 SRP cases with the .055 flash hole and no filing is needed. It is a well made piece of equipment.

I have noticed no changes in accuracy since switching to the SRP but in theory the small flash hole and primer can withstand hotter loads than the LRP cases do. I run mild to medium loads but I have a larger selection of primer brands and types in SR than I do in LR so that gives a new variable to play with. I switched from CCI 400's on one load to Fed 205s but that is the only load I have experimented with.

Primers have one job. Igniting powder. Both will do that. Some people think a larger primer and larger primer flash hole will produce a better ignition. Might be true too. I go for simplicity. If everything I have is set for large primers (pistol or rifle) then I try to stay there just to make my life easier. I don't compete, so if there is a difference in performance, I wouldn't know it most likely.

So, in theory after a certain number of shooting, you can change to larger primers and continue on?

NO !!!

Well, you can - but only by changing to Large Rifle dimensioned brass. (If an SRP case-head has so expanded that an LR primer would fit - and it would be one helluva coincidence if it were to be a perfect fit - the case is still unusable because it has been massively overstressed. It's junk in other words - and you hope the rifle isn't too.)

I think you've misunderstood LVLAaron's post - because the SR primed case-head is stronger than the LR primed equivalent (smaller pocket cut in the middle = 'more meat') it will stand up to 60,000 psi pressures much better. So while say some makes of LRP 6.5CM brass are junk after three or four 'warm' loadings, or a couple of 'hot' ones, you'd expect a lot more life from the Lapua SRP version.

No. However years ago PMC offered SRP in 22-250 Brass. Not a BR rifle but a Colt Sauer. With the SRP and H380 it has never shot smaller groups. Skinny barrel and all the groups were only 3 shot. Things get hot in a hurry. None the less in that rifle it peaked my interest in the value of SRP vs LRP
From my .222, 6/6.5/30BR's all with SRP and being the most accurate cartridges for me something good is there, even though I don't know exactly why. I ordered SRP Peterson brass for my 308. That smaller flash hole in Lapua may be a contributing factor when using there brass. I never thought they drilled a smaller flash hole for no reason at all. The 222 is a standard size flash hole.
As far as ever enlarging the pocket or flash hole I would not do it for Laurie's stated reason above for the pocket. The small flash hole, well, I can prove nothing, but that small flash hole does it the best for me in my rifles.

Which size flash-hole does the Peterson brass have? (You imply it's the standard 2mm / 0.079" size unless I've misunderstood you. )

Peterson sells both LRP and SRP brass in 6.5 CM. I have both and can tell you the SRP has a 1.5mm flash hole, so beware and be prepared with the correct de-capping pin. I ordered mine from RCBS as I use the gold medal match dies. They sent it no charge.

Star line sells 6.5CM brass in both primer sizes, take your pick. Don’t know if it’s any good.

So far I have been saving Hornady and buying Lapua. Haven’t loaded any of either one yet.

I wonder if some laptops or phones might do an auto spelling correction on “flashole”.

Start understanding sarcasm a little.....jeeez.

Well if one wishes to use irony (not sarcasm here) or humour (to use English spelling as I do), the norm is to signal that by adding an appropriate smiley to the comment.

This is a serious forum after all and there are people who, as we all did on starting out, have various and sometimes very serious misconceptions. I looked long and hard at your comment, but couldn't see any indication that it was meant to be humorous, so decided to take it at face value.

Of course, if I'd looked to see how many posts you've made, I'd have realised that you couldn't be so dumb, ........ so please accept my aplogies, Sir.

(.............. Oh, and strange though it is to relate, I have heard that comment made in all seriousness by handloading beginners on forums, or others on the lines of: Where I can I buy the next size up of primer as the present ones keep falling out of my cases? :) )

It's all good. I have never heard it said before, and I kinda thought I was being cute. But I do take your meaning about being serious I guess. No apologies needed.

I don't know an answer to your question but did see a fella with a new Bergara rifle yesterday shoot a four shot group that measured in the low ones c/c with Hornady ammo with lg. pockets. I believe the small pockets make for a stronger case in the base area.
