6.5 creedmoor confusion

hi. I'm looking for wisdom i happen to be lacking. i shoot benchrest (100-200 yrds) and have done so for some time. i also shoot hi power competition (200-300-600 yrds service rifle) and have just finished a rifle for 600 and 1k yrd bencherest. my question is about the rifle. i took it out to the range (after taking a year to build it) to get my chronograph data and shot groups at 100 yrds. 4 different powder charges all grouped in the 1/4" range. i had 6 rounds left of one powder charge.i shot those 6 at 200 and there were 2 holes in the target .4 center to center. there were 3 bullets in each hole. the holes measured in the .1 and .0's. i have never experienced a rifle that tightens up at 200. the rifle is a hall action, shilen barrel, shehane stock, bob white smithed it and t&m did the stock work. any input is greatly appreciated. all this started because i saw a video of gallon milk jugs being shot at 1k yards and i wanted to join in the fun! thanks in advance for the wisdom.

Are you running boat tail bullets? You generally find the BT bullets have a slight actability period. Flat base bullets aren't as affected stabitly wise to the same degree as a BT. Hence the reason you generally find SR shooters will choose a flat base over a BT

No exactly sure what your asking? you mention tightening up, and also reference two grouping. If you area referring to the two grouping assuming bedding is correct another common culprit can be seating depth.

.4 CTC is tight, could it be a slight on an off breeze? (wind flags?) if not I would fine tune seating depth a thou at a time working both in and out and see if it pulls together.

Brian.... All I want to see is a 2" group at 600 yards on the 29th of January.
Can't wait to see it in action. Oh and by the way thanks again for the primers.

i am running bt bullets. i wasn't clear so my question is basically do long range guns shoot better (moa) at longer distances than at closer ranges typically speaking. darren(puzzaz) my friend, i would love to see a 1.7" group on the 29th, although in truth, if i get all the shots on paper i'll be quite happy and you are welcome for the primers :)

What you experience happens to many of us but not out at 600 yards.

Going from 100 to 200/300 yards is where many of us come across this phenomenon.

My take on this is that it has nothing to do with the so called "going to sleep" bullet but more to do with our eyes being more relaxed looking through the high magnification scope at the longer ranges.

I don't think it is the scope. If you take an 80 pound heavy gun running on rails that tracks dead nuts. It happens with it and all the scope is used for is to get on target and get centered. So that takes the scope out of the picture. Matt

I have seen that several times and each time it was with heavy for caliber high ballistic coefficient bullets in overbore cartridges. I have seen a 22/6 mm ackley with 80 gr bullets shoot the same size groups at 500 yards as it did at 100 yards. Several on here have called BS to this but I have seen it in several rifles.

Try it a second time with the same cases and load and you might learn more. I don't know squat compared to most of the guys on this site, but a one time group doesn't teach much.

Your BT bullets a just starting to work at 200 yards. I cant what to hear of your results at 600 and 1000 yards.
The 6.5 Creed is a great choice, keep up the good work.

thanks for all the replies. we have a 600 meter match the 29 of this month so many things may become clearer, including my ability to shoot at 600 (or possible lack thereof). i am heading to the range tomorrow and will post the results of that trip and hopefully that will reveal some more information. and i absolutely agree that one group provides very little relevant information, those were just the last 6 rounds i had. tomorrow i will have more:).

Not to derail the threat, felel free to PM me, but does anyone know of a good online ballistics calculator for the Creedmoor?

An often discussed phenomenon, a number of years back there was a big discussion (a polite way of describing it) on a long gone BB with some world class shooters involved with no clear consensus as to whether it was real and no explanation of what the mechanism could be if it was real.

I'll only go so far as to say I've had two rifles which essentially don't open up groups in terms of MOA at any range under the most benign wind conditions. Wind makes me stupid and a perfect bluebird day doesn't come along often.

At any rate, let us know what happens at the range and the match, more data points.
