6.5 CM case forming?

All,

First post on this board, so hello to everyone.

On to the question...

Has anyone formed 6.5CM from other cases?

The issue I have is that I have a 6.5 barrel due to be shipped in a few weeks and there is nary a piece of brass to be found, save buying loaded ammo (which call me cheap, but I can't justify it, having dies and bullets on the shelf).

I've searched around the internet, and have seen references to forming the cases from .308 and .243, but have yet to see a step by step documented process.

It seems to me, that there are quite a few folks here playing with the 6.5 short action rounds, and was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on the forming process.

I have 6.5 CM Hornady dies and a small lathe. Do I just need to turn a tapered expanding mandrel for the FL die and run the .243 brass through and trim? The .308 brass I suspect would need to be neck turned to remove the "dreaded doughnut"...

Thoughts? Comments?

I'm really not keen on waiting for Hornady to make another production run of brass, and would like to start working up loads when I get the rifle together/fitted...

TIA

Marine, check my early posts re the 6.5x47, the process for making 6.5 CM brass out of other cases is about the same. The best candidates are: 250 Savage, 22-250 Rem and 300 Savage, all are currently manufactured by Remington. I would stick to the 250 Savage and never look back.

Thanks for the info!

I've been forming cases from 243 lapua brass since I was not happy with the original Hornady brass. Supposedly the new brass from hornady is much better but I haven't tried any yet.

You will need a 250 savage f/l die, a case neck trimmer and a 6.5 creedmoor f/l die to get it done.

If you want more info, just reply to this.

TiGuy,

thanks for input and help! I (like you) ended up going the .243 route. I'm running the brass through the FL sizer dies without the stem first, then putting the expander back in, and opening up the necks to 6.5mm. Then I'm running through my rotary case trimmer, to get them to the proper length. Seems to work like a charm (and haven't lost a case yet)!

I think to do the forming all at once is just too much for the case to handle, so this two step (or three actually) seems to be the best method I have found so far...

I have formed other brass such as making 7mm rem br out of 308 and found that annealing before and after forming helped keep the brass flowing uniformly which helps concentricty. I have started annealing brass at a rate of about after every 3rd firing. I have a 6.5-06 that would split the necks after about the 2nd or 3rd firing with win brass. Since I started annealing that has stoped being a problem and on the forming I'm seeing the necks are more uniform when I neck turn. How about using 260 rem brass or 7mm-08
