6.5 bullets

i will have my 6.5x47 assembled this week and have been reading up as much as I can on loads, bullets powder ect.

The main purpose of this rifle will be shot in varmint for score when I don’t feel like shooting my 6br. Will be replacing them with a 30br at some point next year.

I’m goal would to also shoot 500-600 matches when possible. So I have a ton of varget and some 4350 for powder, getting lapua brass, cci450 primers and plan to get the new Whidden clock adjust die set.

My main concern is what bullet to choose. I don’t feel like I need a 140 due to primarily only shooting 100-300yd matches. I picked up some 130 rdf cheap to at least try. I’m in more need of a overall accurate projectile and not as much as low drag. Any suggestions

You will find that the 130 Berger target vld’s pointed and varget will get you where you need to be. This is the absolute best combination I’ve found for 100-300 yards.

I second the 123grain Lapua Scenar bullets they shoot the best of anything I have used.
The best Load I found was
123gr Lapua Scenar
36.2 Varget
CCI BR-4
Bullet set right on the land ( I found pulling it off the land opened up groups)
Shoot one little hole
By far the best shooting load in my rifle

I am "third" and agree with Ringostar & k80skeet, the 123 Scenar is the bullet for my 6.5x47L as well. 28" SS Barrel, 8 twist.

SURPRISINGLY, k80skeet 123 Scenar & Varget load matches mine! I was using CCI 450 primers.

I believe Varget & RL15 will work with both bullets.

I found it very hard to stabilize the 130 and heavier bullets.

Left is a 4 shot group with the 123 Scenars, Right is a 5 shot group with 120 SMK's.

Both Target bullseye's are about the size of a #2 pencil eraser. The dime next to the group with the smk's gives it a bit more realistic view. Both were @ 100 yards.

Both bullets are very respectable in 600 yard matches. The 123 is my personal favorite at 600 yards.

NOTE: The target picture on the left was taken when I was "fine" tuning my barrel. Note how just .200 grains of powder makes a difference. I could post several more pictures showing the exact scenario. In Fact, I will do so on the next post. Patience while developing is the biggest factor.

DISCLAIMER: Again, I am not recommending anyone or suggesting anyone use the "powder loads & bullets" shown in my pictures. I am showing what works best in my rifles.

Notice with the 123 Scenars, .200 tenths made a significant pattern difference. Once past 36.2 they kept opening up, plus my bolt started getting a little sticky!

Notice on the picture below what .100 tenth difference in grain powder made.

They opened up past 39.0, but starting closing @ 39.4. I remember the 39.4 load I experienced a slightly sticking bolt, so I stopped.
