6.5-300wsm

I love mine use it strictly for hunting, Shoot 140VLD's at 3185 fps has a .292 neck turn the necks on the brass after I neck them down.

Really a neat caliber / cartridge . Shot prairie dogs to cow elk with it & 1 Coues deer @ 665 yards. No problem to get on the 1000 yard gong w decent groups.
I shot 140 VLD's @ 3175 & 160 Matrix @ 3000 fps.
Retumbo powder & Norma brass formed from 270 WSM then reamed necks.
Only down side was barrel life...I lost .060" of lands in 700 rounds !

It definately is overbore, I just scoped mine and it wasn't bad in the throat after 400 rounds no firecracking. Since i have the barrel off i am going to set it back 1 turn and clean it up. 26" barrel you need to get max. performance and then you can always set it back if need be. I started out using RL17 shot really well but I don't like the case fill, I started playing with H1000 and getting good results without playing with seating depth thats why I am just going to set it back and start over think I might even try some of the new IMR 7977. I had good luck with magpro but was to unstable. If you want this for a hunting round I don't think you can go wrong IMHO. I use 270 WSM brass also makes necking down alot easier.

Hi I am new but would like some info on the 6.5 -300wsm maybe ballistics or even opinions. Thanks Clint[/QUOTE
I have one that I use for long range groundhog hunting. I shot a groundhog at 1164 yards with one shot on my first hunt with it and hit one at 1358 yards with 2 shots. Got all this on film with a witness. These ranges were checked with a Carl Zeiss optical rangefinder that has been calibrated and a Leica 1200 yard rangefinder. Extremely! flat shooting. I am running a very hot load of Reloader 22 (62.1 gr) behind a 142 Sierra Matchking with Federal 215 Match primers. My speed was 3350 fps and my extreme spread was only 6 fps for 5 shots. Like I say this is a very hot load so be careful. But this was what it shot the best at.

What is the range limit for elk with this round
Shot mine @ 440 yards. She was standing still , broadside & in the morning sun.
I was prone on a flat rock w a Harris bipod & a rear bag.The 140 VLD has a good energy level at that yardage but shot placement is most important.
Make sure to get a 1:8 twist barrel to accommodate the high BC bullets.
Hopefully we'll start seeing some more 160 grain bullets w a good BC , Matrix is the only one I know of now, Berger should be next !

I have a 6.5 WSM with about 450 rounds down a 26" Brux that really likes the 140 VLD's and Reloader 25. I tried R22, H1000 and MagPro as well, but the combo used now works great. I shot a 4x4 raghorn at a little over 600 yards 3 years ago with the 140 vld and it when down on impact...good bullet with great BC. This one is going to get turned into a 7WSM once the barrel is shot out.

I have a long action M700 that I may use for this round. I understand the case capacity is very close to the .264WM, so in the long action throated properly it should be a good set up for the Matrix 150/160 grain bullet. As one stated, it should be easier I would think to use the 270 WSM case. I look forward to learning more.
