6.5-284 Win. or Norma?

Hi everyone. I am going to be building a 6.5-284 on a Remington 700 30-06 length action. I have a Krieger #5 on order. In the meantime my gunsmith has asked that I decide which reamer I want used, the Winchester or Norma. He says the Norma results in a slightly longer throat so that long bullets such as the Berger VLDs can be seated a little further out resulting in a bit more powder capacity. The gun will not be a bench rest gun and will primarily be for sport, varmint and hunting. I Thought this would be the place to tap the expert opinions. Thanks for your advice.

i have the exact same set up as you are wanting to build a ss rem la w/a #5 8 twist krieger at 28'' a called dave kiff at pt and g and told him that i wanted a reamer that was suitable for 140 vlds and 142 mks he had one on the shelf and sent it to me the reamer is still at the smiths or i could give you the numbers on it. im not exactly sure whitch was right for me so i called dave he is some kind of reamer guru and will not lead u astray hope this helps

Make sure what the web area dimensions are on the reamers. IIRC the Norma dimension is .500" and the Winchester is .496". I'm pulling this from memory so I could be wrong.

+1 for going to Dave Kiff for the reamer. Get the 6.5 X 284 Norma reamer, floating pilot, and get a couple of the pilots too on each side of the standard diameter, they come on .0002" increments. Make sure your smith has the appropriate GO and NO/GO gauges to match, if not pick them up from Dave too.

Make sure your dies are 6.5 X 284 Norma too, both Redding and Forster make nice dies and I'd recomend the micrometer bullet seating version. Read the directions if you've never used them before.

Finally, Lapua brass. Buy a small quantity, measure it for uniformity and if it's good to go buy a bunch from that production lot number.

Thanks for all your input. My smith already has the reamers but I do believe he uses PT&G. I'll go with the Norma reamer, redding dies and Lapua brass. That should take care of me. Thanks.

+ one for Dave Kiff he is very helpful. Looks like you got it all figured out anyways. Good luck with your build and happy hunting.
Wayne.
