I've been shooting Berger 140's out of my 6.5-284 over 52.5gr of 4831sc. This combo works great!
I was doing some load development yesterday with the 139 Scenar's and 4831sc, and got some interesting results. Every load I tried was showing a lot of vertical. I kept throwing more powder to it to reduce the vertical, but I got to a point where I wasn't too comfortable! I got up to 53.5 gr of 4831sc, and still didn't have pressure signs,slight machine marks on the back off the cases, but no ejector marks, or primer cratering/flattening, also no shiny markings). I was NOT shooting over a chrony during this session, so I'm not sure of velocity. All I know, is that the vertical was reduced every time I went up with powder, so I wanted to keep going up. I was meeting/exceeding 6.5-284 Shehane loads in a standard case/standard chamber, which made me question what I was doing, so I stopped at that point.
Anyone have any thoughts? I know the Scenar's are typically smaller in diameter when compared to other bullets in the same caliber, but does that make enough of a difference to go that much higher on the powder charge? I know, I need to put the chronograph up and see what I'm getting in terms of velocity, but does velocity matter if vertical is reduced, and pressure signs are minuscule?
