6.5-284 question

So.. I'm gunna build up a 6.5-284. I already shoot a straight 284. Can I just get/use a 6.5 bushing in my redding comp 284 dies for the 6.5? I would think yes, but not sure
Thanks

You would only need the bushing die anyways. They aren't real cheap or real expensive but my opinion is that you will need a 6.5 variant to do the proper neck sizing. Hopefully I'm wrong !

I was trying to do the opposite, going from smaller to bigger(.308 to .338) but the opening in the die was only .350" , not enough to allow the brass thru the hole (.338 + .014 + .014 = .366")
Redding was able to answer so I didn't have to mess around trying.

I used a Redding type S FL die to do exactly what you are describing. In addition to using a smaller bushing , What I found was that the decapping stem was too thick to except a 6.5mm expander ball so I had to purchase a skinnier decapping stem ($4 part) for the 6.5 mm expander ball.

If you do not re-size with an expander ball then you can just remove it and not have a need to replace any parts.

You can bore the ledge out if you want to go to a larger caliber, and just use the correct bushing. If your going smaller, just buy the bushing you need....

Seating and neck sizing should be ok. What are you going to size the body/shoulder with?

The position of the shoulder and diameter are identical for SAMMI, so inserting the correct diameter bushing for the 6.5 mm will work fine. This was confirmed by Redding when I asked about the similar question for S-dies.

But the OP did not mention an S-Die, did he?

As I said, for seating and neck sizing w/ Redding Competition dies, the body sleeve should fit fine. But that's not what I asked the OP about. I think I'll let him respond.

PS: The significant difference between 284 Win and 6.5-284 WRT shoulder setback is the smaller diameter at the shoulder/neck junction. However, since the difference is only ~1/2 mm, that leaves only ~1/4 mm of the shoulder untouched all around by the larger neck orifice of a 284 Win S-Die (or Body Die) which is almost exactly .010" and is probably negligible. Personally, I would go ahead and spring for a 6.5-284 body die anyway, since they're only $38, but the 284 Win S-Die (if OP has one) will work.

He did mention using a bushing and that is the S die........
As I said- he only needs the correct bushing to make it workk...

Incorrect. The OP referred to his "Redding comp dies" and also stated his sizing die has a bushing.

Redding sells three types of "bushing" dies:

Competition Bushing Neck Sizer Die
Type S Bushing Neck Sizer Die
Type S Bushing Full Length Sizer Die

Only the latter sizes body/shoulder. But the only one with "comp" in the name does not size the body. Therefore it must not be a Type S Full Length Sizer Die, if the OP's qualifying terms (what few there are) are accurate.

Which is why I asked him what he uses to size body/shoulder. We still cannot really know.
