6.5-284 or 264 win mag

I'm a bit biased towards the 6.5-284 having zero experience with the larger. The 264 has an advantage on paper, but doesn't guarantee the accuracy window at that speed........

For a long time I shot a Win 70 fitted with a shilen barrel in 264 win mag and loved it. Then I started shooting a friends 6.5-284 and am a believer in it now. The 6.5-284 seems to recoil less and better brass is available. So for what it's worth I would now go with the 6.5-284 if I had to do it over again. My 2 cents

You didn't say but I assume you are using this for hunting. The 6.5-284 will harvest white tail deer sized animals to 900+ yds. It has a reputation for being very accurate and the recoil is manageable.

No question about it , it's the 6.5/284 over the 264 . Superior accuracy , less barrel heat , less recoil , and superior brass availability . I've shot both for hunting and target , and it's not even a fair match up . My current 6.5/284 is the Shehane version , which I like even better . I will agree that for hunting it's a whitetail gun , but it's been used out here in the west on mule deer . I find it a bit lacking at the longer ranges on the bigger bodied mule deer . It is a hell of a 1K gun , bench or F class .

thanks for the input guys, just picked up a rem 700 in 264 win mag, 26" 8 twist ebco, barrel,, hs precision stock, detachable mag, and a 30 mm tube, was out shooting it this evening,,, shoots the 140 really good...

well, I guess my opinion doesn't matter now that you have bought it, but you picked the one I was going to give a thumbs up for. I have had (2) different .264WM, both factory guns, winchester and remington. they both shot lights out with 100hp and 120spt. I mean averaged 1/2" groups with 3 shots. I had one 6.5/284 built on a sako action, with a hart barrel. it shot as good, but didn't have the speed the .264WM had. For a hunting gun, I would do the WM, for target/match shooting, it goes to the 6.5/284 hands down, just for barrel life and less powder/recoil. they both will kill deer & elk (i've done it). if you can find it, the winchester brass I found to do much better than the remington.

LOL, I always find this funny. They ask a question, then get a unanimous vote on one and they go with the other!

FYI Erik, i picked this up on a trade, i couldn't pass up on the deal,, i still have the barrel and action to build, but now since i got one ill build the other.
@ thanks FryeGuy for the info,,, do u have any experience with the 6.5 stw?

no experience with the STW. I think the 264 is overbore as it is. I reached a plateau, where it just leveled off no matter what. It shot the 100hp sierra bullets very well. My father in law has 5 different .264WM, needless to say, if someone puts a new model out in a .264WM, he has to have it. every one of them likes 70.0 of H4831SC, with the 100hp. some like it better than others. thats all he uses deer hunting. That is now kind of a starting load for every one we get now. I liked the 120spt best to hunt with, although I have killed plenty of deer with the 100's. I did shoot an elk cow with my last WM, with the 120spt sierra, at 298yds. she went about 20yds, then rolled about 30 yds down a hill. at the butcher, when nothing was left but carcus, quartered up hanging weight was 346 lbs. My uncles 6x6 only weighed 30lbs or so more. the 100hp bullets in the 6.5-284 i had shot about 300-500fps or so slower, but I also didn't push them beyond max loads like some folks do. The 100hp did much better on deer when they were slowed down some, "better" meaning less meat & internal damage. I did shoot one elk cow with a (6.5-284) w/ a 140sbt, pass thru at 120yds or so. Same trip to TX shot a small bison with the (6.5-284) and the 160spt sierra. put it on it's butt right there. if you want penetration, shoot the 160's if you can find them. I shot the buff thru the shoulder, broke onside shoulder bone, directly thru the spine, and out the opposite shoulder bone. those are freaking big bones, and that bullet just left a huge hole thru all of them. the 160's will do very well in the 264wm too. you will love the .264WM. Yeah, I'm long winded. sorry. I think before I built another 6.5-284, I would compare it to the 6.5x55 swede.

i was shooting 140 Bergers out to 425 yesterday,, the guy had sighted it in @ 50 yds. hell out to this range we didnt have much drop,,it shot fast and flat, like the 243 ai we were shooting.
i liked that,, this is going to make for a good client gun,,,id be using it for deer, elk and antelope, id like to get it out in the prairie for speed goats.

Get you some Retumbo and 130 Nosler Accubounds for that 264 win mag and you are set for anything from WT deer through elk. From my 27 3/4" Shilen barrel I average 3350 fps, talk about flat shooting. ;D

Without going to the extra expense of an STW you could try the .300 Win Mag case.
Years ago I developed a .264-300 that was outstanding for speed and accuracy.

The barrel was (and still is) a 30" PacNor 3-groove and the reamer was an alteration by Dave Manson (for free, what a gentleman!) of a .264 win reamer of his. He relocated the belt on the reamer and that was it.
Awesome cartridge with N 560, LRB's 132 grainers and all sorts of 139-144 grain bullets.
I should have nicknamed it "the Hammer of Thor" or something like that.

hey 2644ever, now that 264/300 sounds like fun,, ive been reading on the 6.5 allen mag,, seem pretty interesting too,,, do u have any more info on the 264/300

Well Phil, what else can I say? Case capacity gain is between 11 and 13 grs of water, depending on the brand of brass (Norma rules!) and everything that is possible with the .264 is more easily achieved with the 6.5-300, with less pressure...
Thanks probably to an outstanding barrel, that cartridge is the most accurate magnum I ever shot with (and I think it's hard to beat a good .338 Win Mag) and it's more accurate than most 6.5's I ever owned, with the exception of the 6.5 Lapua and Creed' .
If you want to give it a try, don't paint yourself in a corner: get at least a 28" tube in order to get the most of slow powders like N 560 or MRP. Try also Norma's 130 VLD moly (not jammed in the land, just soft seated) they can outperform the Lapuas.
