6.5-284 Norma ???

Every body tells me that a Winchester and Norma 6.5-284 are the same. I now have the specs for both and they are FAR from being the same.I have one of them new Savage F class 6.5-284 Norma rifles and need to start buying reloading supplies, brass and dies). What are you guys using to reload the Norma version.
Thanks, Hawkeye Joe

There is no Winchester 6.5 x 284, only a 284 Winchester,i.e. a 7mm).

Lapua brass, Redding type S full length bushing die, & a Wilson inline bullet seater to cap it off is what I use. If you don't have an arbor press, just get Redding's deluxe bushing die set, & just neck size till the cases tell you otherwise. Al.

Robert is correct, of course. We assume you mean that you are looking at using 284W brass necked down to 6.5mm.

JMHO but I would not even think about it. Go with the good brass and don't look back. You'll pay a few $$$ more up front but will soon forget that little cost once you are knee deep in debt trying to keep up with the other shooters and their gizmos and gimmicks. And a new pickup to haul it all in.:D

Is the Norma and Lapua brass the same deminsions? And will those,2) manfs. brass fit in the new Savage F class 6.5 - 284. Although I have been handloading for several different calibers for 12 years or so I am new at this 6.5 game period. Thanks for the help in advance. Bill

Thanks!! I found this in Cartridges of the world. It says 6.5-284 NORMA.. The penciled in specs are from my Sierra manual 6.5-284 Winchester. Then, I wanted to buy some factory ammo so I could break it in this weekend.Went to Midways website and the confusion got deeper. The Norma ammo was listed as 6.5-284 Winchester, And the Nosler was listed as 6.5-284 Norma. What's up with that.

All,

The first 6.5-.284 rounds, circa 1997 or before) were loaded on .284 Winchester brass, and tight chambers,i.e., 6.5-284 DDS reamer) were originally cut to accept this brass.

Around 1999-2000, Norma and Lapua started producing 6.5-284 cases,no necking down required), with Norma officially "adopting" the round. IIRC, both companies used SAAMI chamber dimensions for the .284 Winchester as their starting point. Since one of Winchester's first rifles for the .284 was the Winchester 100 semiauto, a SAAMI chamber is considerably looser than Winchester produced .284 brass - doing things this way makes extraction easier. Reverse the situation however, and you'll find Norma and Lapua brass won't fit in a 6.5-284 chamber cut specifically for Winchester cases.

I believe, but am far from certain) the Savage F-Open rifles are chambered to accept Norma and Lapua cases. Winchester cases may be used in them, but may suffer from blown primers or case web expansion sooner than Norma or Lapua products - simply because of greater clearance between case web and chamber.

Better than guessing, speculating, or using the rumor mill, do a chamber cast & remove all doubt. Cheap & effective. Al.

The new Savage F-class 6.5-284 rifles are chambered for the now standard 6.5-284 Norma dimensions, which are the case dimensions used by Norma, Lapua, Hornady, and Nosler. These dimensions are a bit larger in diameter at the base than the .284 Winchester brass but you can use the Winchester brass by necking it down and firing it in a 6.5-284 chamber so that it will expand to fit. There is no pboblem in doing that, but if you have a chamber cut for the original, smaller) .284 Winchester dimensions the modern 6.5-284 Norma brass made by Norma, Lapua, Hornady, and Nosler will be too large for that chamber. As RCW stated in another thread using the old .284 Winchester case dimensions is a step backwards.

I have around 200 rounds through the new Savage 6.5x284. I use Hornady brass because of consistancy and price. I do have to neck turn them .001". The chamber is .297. If you use Lapua brass a loaded neck will measure .296". This is a great rifle with tremendous accuaracy with any bullet I have shot through it.

Thanks for the response guys.Looks like Lapua Brass and a Redding Comp neck die will be ordered this weekend. As for the seater. I think it's time for a arbor press and Wilson die.

Bill
What bullets are you going to start with. I'm going with the 140gr Berger's. They've been very kind to me in the past with other calibers. Also they're quality is EXCELLENT!!

I am using the rifle for an article and it will be for sale soon if anyone is interested. olsinglshot@gmail.com

Sure man. I would love to get a copy. I will be loading Lapua Brass with the SMK 142 s. Should I turn my necks also? Thanks, Bill

How difficult is it to change the chamber from the winchester chamber to the larger one, so one can use Lapua brass?

Hey Man,
I finally got around to shooting that 6 X 47 Shehane Sunday. I was very happy with .991 at 500 yds. first long-range group. I still have not shot that 6.5 X 284 F class Savage yet. Was wanting to get this one out first. I am ready to load some stuff. Just got to get at it. How is your gun shooting? Bill
