6.5-284 Norma and 108 Scener?

Pet loads would be appreciated. Figured this would be a great deer/pronghorn combination, and pretty flat shooting to boot.

Thats way too light for me. I like the 140-150 class of pills in a 6.5-284.

I have no idea what that bullet is produced for but it a really bad choice for your 6.5X284.

I'd prolly research what bullet the CM folks are using, then go with that at a minimum, but preferably a slightly heavier and higher BC would be my GO TO. There is enough energy in the boiling room to look in the 140 plus range.

I suppose everyone has their opinion and surly there in NO one correct answer. Nor do I hunt with my 6.5x284, but have tons of experience with the 7mm mag, another fast cartridge. As long as the cartridge goes BANG, any bullet should kill a speed goat. Some hunters like speed, some like bullet performance and weight retention. I shoot mine primarily 800 or 1000 yard fclass. Light bullets simply wont perform as well as the heavier, more importantly, high BC bullets. For that reason I typically like the heaviest bullet a barrel and cartridge can handle. Thats my limited opinion. In my 7mag days shooting critters, lots of hunters in my group chose 120-130 grainers, thinking speed. And man it either dropped them, or lost em. Too much energy passed right through the deer and beyond. So wasted energy is my thoughts. So I went on a small limb and started using Heavier 175's. Well no more loosing critters!

So give the 108 a try! Good shot placement "Trumps" bullet or speed.

The 6.5 Creed with, 130 grain, Horn ELD-M's or, Berger OTM, Hybrid's, seem to Be, the perfect "Blend" of,.
descent BC, good accuracy at, Longish Range, good Velocity and, a tad LOWER, Recoil for, Me !
However, I WILL Shoot, the Thicker Jacketed, 143 gr. ELD-X's for, Big Game, as I WANT, the Penetration !
And they "Mushroom",. Nicely. ( so I'll Put up with, a Little extra, Recoil for, a Few, shots ).
I really Enjoy shooting, My Braked, Tikka, in 6.5 Creed with, the 130 grain, Bullets at, Steel Plates.

I went lope hunting in 1989 with a high school buddy that had been many times. When I was getting geared up he let me read 2 or 3 books from the then most popular hunting writers. I picked a 25-06 that was recommended buy all of the writers that I read. I used federal premium ammo as I didn't reload at the time, and the load a picked was 115 grain Ballistic tips. I was successful on a buck and a doe. A 25-06 is with in 1 grain powder capacity of a 6.5-284. Your load sounds like a ballistic double to what I shoot at that time. I can't imagine why it would be a bad choice. Good luck and show us the photos when you get back!

The G7 BC is only .231 making it suitable for very short range. The most common hunting bullet are probably the 140s . Berger's 140 VLD hunting bullet has a BC of .307.

I have not shot anything below 123gr personally (yet). My rifle loves 130-140gr pills with H4831SC powder.
Currently using a ER Shaw 26" bull barrel on a Savage model 12 action.
*edit* (I listed the incorrect bullet information before, Nosler is correct)
130gr Nosler RDF bullet with 48.1gr of H4831SC.

I've had very similar results using 50.0gr of H1000 with the same (Nosler) bullet.

*edit* - I forgot to mention that the velocities with those loads are around 2700 fps. I try not to push loads past the max recommended. I have not seen any indication of high pressure for that load (on my rifle)...but yours may vary...

To the original question, two powders really shine. 4831 and Hybrid. The 6.5x284 with light bullets and reasonable loads is never a bad choice. The Scenar bullets are great bullets just on the higher end of the market. The 100-110g range is one flat shooting puppy.
