6.5-284 getting tired

Ive got just a tad over 1000 rounds down my 6.5-284. For the last few hundred Ive noticed it really coppers up in the last half inch or so. What would cause this. I know its due to be set back or changed so thats my plan for this winter. Its 29" 8 1/2 twist and hasnt been set back yet. Any advice on getting it set back. Its used for 1k BR shooting with 139 Lapuas and 142MK's.

Barry - problem is setting back a match barrel won't give you the barrel life of a fresh barrel and it may or may not shoot as well.

I get two barrels at a time for my 6.5 X 284. My smith did a good job, the chamber lengths of the two barrels are within well under .001" of each other. When the first barrel is shot out, I'll mount the second and order two more. That way I don't have to worry over availability, late delivery, or shooting a worn out barrel.

In match shooting you've got to look at barrels as consumables, just like powder or bullets.

Rust is correct. You can't really see a barrel as a long term investment especially on a 6.5 bore.

I know how many people here and there love the 6.5x.284, but I am expecting to get 1800-2000 rounds down the swede before the bore is toast. I shoot coated Tungston Bullets and slower powders like N560.

I shot the 6.5x.284 for one year and now I went back to the swede. I see no real advantage to shooting the 6.5x.284 over the swede unless you plan on really hot rodding your loads to over 3100 fps.

Proteus-x shoots a .260 AI which has nearly the same case capacity as a swede, but shorter neck and shoots higher pressure loads, steeper shoulder, slower powder and I think we'll even out. He has 1827 down his pipe.

Tell you the truth I don't know if I would let my barrel go that deep into its life. I would rather switch off at 1500 and save any ooh shet where did that round go.

Setting a barrel back may or may not be an answer. if you have two guns and you buy a reamer you can have the two guns cut with the same reamer and throw the set-back barrel on your "back-up" rifle.

Setting it back and removing a little from the muzzle can really be successful, but only if you catch it in time. Letting it go too long and it's a waste of effort. An honest and knowledgable 'smith should be able to borescope your barrel and tell you if it's worth doing.

Rhinout,

The 6.5x55 has been around for a lot longer than the 6.5x284. Yet the newer cartridge is more popular for most types of target shooting. The popularity of the 6.5x284 speaks for itself. I'm not saying there aren't some situations where the Swede isn't best, including if you're concerned about barrel costs. I treat barrel wear a bit like fuel consumption in a car - if you want high performance, you have to pay for it!

I have shot both. I went back to the Swede. Now perhaps in 1k benchrest the 6.5x.284 would beat the swede. Never shot it br style.

However for F-class work. I couldn't really see any advantage I gained with the 6.5x.284 over the 6.5x55 swede. I had some quirky wierd vertical too with the 6.5x.284. I went back to the swede on the same platform and it all went away.

The 6.5x.284 is more popular for sure. People say 6.5 during a match and you can infer its x.284. However more and more people I talk to are moving away from the 6.5x.284 into the .260, .260AI, 6.5x47, 6.5x55SE and the like. Some are even go up to 7mm or down to 6mm.

I can tell you that at Bodines I wouldn't go below the 6.5 as I have seen the 6's get blown around too much in the wind.

I can shoot my 140 grain class bullets to 3000 fps no problems, no pressure signs. So I am shooting the same 2950 fps with the same bullets, in the same case and using less of a slower powder to do it.

If your gonna stick with H4350 then around 45 grains will give you 2950 in a 30 inch tube...but your pressure will be running higher than I would like. So for 4.5 grains less your getting the same velocity.

I however use 47.6 grains of VIN N560 and the chamber pressure is much less and my brass lasts a long time.
