6.5-284 Case Prep & Starting Load

I just ordered a Shilen select match 26" 1/8 6.5-284 along with a Savage varmint action from NSS and wanted to get ahead of the game. I was going to run the brass necks through an expander once then load a few up for break in. The brass I will be using is Lapua and I have the following bullets available:
120 Scenar L
123 Scenar
139 Scenar
140 Amax

For initial break in I was going to start with 45.5g of H4350 over 120 Scenar's. Does that sound about right for good starting point with a new barrel?

This is the most expensive barrel I have ever owned and wanted to make sure I do things correctly.

Thanks,

Shawn

You are off to a great start with your equipment. Every barrel is different but consult the 6.5-284 page for load suggestions, just start about 10% below the listed loads. I run a bunch more H4831SC or Retumbo with the 140 VLD's but that is my hunting rifle. I never gave H4350 a try, Might be a little fast for the 140's.

Thanks.

I definitely plan on hunting with this puppy next season but for now, it will be a paper puncher. I am also ordering the same barrel in 260 so I don't have to use the 284 for paper punching:)

I mainly wanted to shoot at the lower velocities for break in purposes then ladder up an accurate load.

Cheers!

Shawn

Um I think about 47grs would be a little better for 123's. Retumbo works great as does the overlooked Hybrid 100v for 140 class points. One nice thing about the 6.5-284 is there are about 15 powders that work. I ran 48.5gr H4350 and a 140 vld jammed all day long in mine, until I started to shoot 49gr H100v. That is a great load. 55-56 gr Retumbo is very stable. Retumbo may be tough to get right now. Definitely check the 6.5-284 page on here by Jason. This cat has been skinned 100 times and more. Good luck!!!!
