6.5-284 & 147 ELDs

Anyone played with this combo? Velocities? Accuracy? Powders?

Ran 10 each .2 apart over the magnetospeed yesterday, RL 23 & RL 26

Probably started too high with RL 23 and saw pressure signs pretty early @ 2940

Seemed to be a node @ 2840 with RL 26, went up to 2920 with no pressure signs.

What's your barrel length? Your velocity seems a bit low for RL-23. I'm getting ~3,050 fps out of a .260 AI with RL-23 and 140s and the bigger case should be able to match that velocity with the 147 with no trouble whatsoever. RL-26 should be ideal for wringing top velocities out of the 6.5-.284 case with heavier bullets. I've been shooting 54 gr. of RL-26 behind 140s, giving me right around the same velocity as the RL-23/.260 AI combination and it is a fairly mild load in my rifle - no pressure signs at all. Been meaning to probe for the top end with RL-26 but I just haven't had the time and I'm willing to bet I'm 1.5 to 2 grains away from pressure. 3,100 easy with a 140 and maybe 3,025 with a 147/150.

Anyway, that's out of my barrels. Be safe.

Thanks for replying. It's a 26" Shilen Select Match on a SSS timed & trued Savage long action.

I'm running 28" in both the .260 AI and the 6.5-.284, so that will account for 50 - 75 fps difference or so.

I meant to ask earlier - what kind of pressure signs are you seeing? Brass? Primers? Seating depth relative to the lands?

Mostly ejector rings, primers starting to flatten and/or crater. -.024 off. I'm not concerned about the primers but the rings from the ejector worrie me a little. Lapua brass, CCI 250 primers.

I think I'll give it a good cleaning and have another go at it.

Brass flow into the ejector ring indicates excessive pressure. Your concerns are well founded.
