6.5-06 info- Brass, Powder.

Which brass to use. What powder. Ok will be building a everything rifle for hunting and some F-class open. Anyways don't worry about the rifle. I want to know if the brass needs to be 25-06, 270, 30-06, I know I can use Lapua if I go with 30-06 right. Anyways mostly winchester to start with. Now which has less of a negative effect on brass, necking up or down. I also want a twist that will handle the lighter bullets for coyotes and heavies for bigger game. Anyways not a newby, just not much dealing withthe 6.5's yet. Thanks -EagleI

I use 25-06 brass for my 6.5-06 AI. If you are going to use 270 brass you will need to trim or have the chamber cut with a 6.5-270 (6.5mmX64 Brenneke) reamer.

Eagle1,
I shoot a 6.5/06 in LR competition so here's my input. Barrel: Any of the custom barrel makers will do. I use either a 1/8 or 1/8.5 twist since I shoot the heavier bullets in the 140gr weight class. My barrels are 30" but you might want a shorter one for hunting. I wouldn't go shorter than 26". Powder: You'll find the 6.5/06 likes slow powder like 4831sc. Primers: I've had good luck with standard LR primers. Winchester, CCI and even Remington work well. Brass: I use 25/06 brass. I find it easier to neck the brass up to .264 No inside case neck reaming needed. I just outside clean up and once done just load and shoot. I have used both Remington and Winchester brass with good results. The key here is sorting each brand by weight and adjusting your load accordingly. I prefer Winchester brass but that's just me. I have no experience with "light weight" bullets in this caliber. If you are planning on some F class shooting go with either the Berger 140VLD or the 142 SMK's. For these bullets you will need atleast a 1/8.5 twist and I recomend a 1/8

Good shooting, Jim

I have a 6.5-06 made on a Mauser conversion. It sports a 26" Stainless Lilja contour 5 barrel. I've had this rifle for about 8 years now and its been deer, elk, coyote, 'chuck, Pdog, and wild pig hunting with me. It is as accurate a rifle as one could ask for in a walk around sporter. It shoots 95gr Vmax into very tight groups, 120gr Noslers into one hole, and 140gr Gamekings into inch groups at 200yds. Where it really shines is with 140gr bullets from 300-450 yds. It really packs a whallop with minimal recoil and noise compared to some of the other offerings. :)

I've done nothing but neck up 25-06 Winchester brass. Load and shoot. Best powder for the light weight bullets is ww760. For the 120's I use either WW760 or 4350, and for the 140's I use VV560. Try it you'll like it!! ;) WD

Built a 6.5-06 back in the 1980s on a Win M70 action with a 26 inch 10 twist McGowen barrel. Twist was fast enough to stabilize 140 gr bullets but shot mainly 120-125 grainers at around 3000 fps. Regularly put three into 1/2 moa out to 300 yds.

Used Win .270 brass. Had to trim the longer necks to .30-06 length. Best powder was IMR 4831. Used Win, Rem, CCI primers.

No luck on the dies,I bought them :) If I had to do it all over again I would use a 6.5-270 reamer to utilize the longer necks. I still use the .270 and trim the bare minimum. You can buy brass with a 6.5-06 head stamp and I may just do it so I don't acidently mix my other 06 family members up ???
Wayne.

I have built two 6.5-06's. I have used mostly 30-06 brass all kinds. I like the 270 win with the longer neck, especially when you chase the throat.
