6.5-06 Ackley Improved

I am considering having a 6.5-06 Improved built with an 8 twist barrel. I would appreciate any information on brass for this round. I reload .243 AI, but I am not experienced at neck turning and necking down brass. Is it practical and possible to use Lapua 30-06 brass or should I use brass that is closer to the 6.5mm caliber (.270 or .280)?

Or you could choose the 270 Winchester case. The 6.5/06 is a .264/06 meaning you would be going from .277 to .264. The 270 case is about .041" longer than the 30/06. After necking down trim to length.

Necking the case up will shorten the length of the case. Necking the case down will lengthen the length of the case. When going to Ackley Improved the case will shorten, some cases I form shorten .035" when formed and shorten an additional .010" when fired. I choose to use a case that covers the chamber. Then there is the length of the neck, I want all the bullet hold I can get, when forming wildcat type cases I find some have short necks. To off set the down side of the short neck I use cases that are too long. The 280 and 270 are longer than the 25/06 and 30/06.

The 280 Remington cases has its advantages, it is longer from the shoulder to the case head. When off setting the length of the chamber the .051" additional case body length can be used to off set the length of a chamber that has a perceived 'head space' problem. I find it easier to form a case first then fire than to form a case then fire form it.
