6/48 thread repair

Hi,

The first 2-3 threads of a 6/48 scope base hole is stripped out on a M70 target barrel. I have a 6/48 tap for cleaning holes but not starting them. Should I get a taper tap of the same size or will I have to drill and tap the next size larger hole? Thanks. Bob

Brownells sells a repair tap just for this reason. If they only need to be chased a tapered tap could save your bacon....

I bought this kit years ago. Man has it been handy in installing new bases, repair or enlarging stipped holes up a size. I especially like the quality 'jobber' drill bits that don't bend or break easily and bore the correct tap size holes. They also give you the blind hole 'blunt' end taps for barrel screw holes as well as tapered taps. It is a well thought out kit. If you have money to spare, get their screw kit as well and you are good to go for years to come.

Drill and Tap Kit

Of course that is a lot of money for one bad screw hole. If you get in a bind finding what you need I can mail you a tap for you to use and mail back.

SongDog,

I can see some threads so I will get a tap from Midway since I also need a Marlin 336 mainspring.

Sighter,

Thanks for the offer. Midway has a tap for $2 that should be ok for a chaser. They also have an 8/40 too which I think is the one you are talking about. I wouldn't trust myself to drill it straight on a rifle barrel anyhow. If I could get by with just the tap it might be ok. I would have to drive 50 miles to have it done is all.
