6-284??

looking for opinions from those that have had or built 6 284s. i am looking for opinions on building the most usable flat trajectory/ wind drift combo here. my ideas were to put an 8 twist on it. i d like to keep the barrel at 26-28 in this is on a budget savage build, boyds thumbhole ground hog carry gun. im looking to shoot 300-700yds. i have a 6brx being built and a 18lb 6.5 284 for shorter and farther ranges. i know about the barrel burning thing as well, this is an "i just want one" thing but am trying not to make too many mistakes. im am sort of worried about poor traj from shooting heavy slugs from this round? is it a waste of time setting this thing up for 75-85 gr bullets? what kind of results can i expect over a standard 6mm rem?

Build it on an 8 twist and shoot 105-115 class bullets.

Not sure where you get the poor trajectory rumor, as my 26" Rock tube does 3325 with 107's, which out performs the 6.5-284 to 1000+ yards.

If you want to shoot the mid weights, you might as well shoot a 243.

In case you missed this from a bit ago......

thanks alf.. I searched and read before i posted. I am just cautious of making mistakes during these builds. I want be happy with what im shooting. Had a 6 rem and a few 243s. Really not that impressed with them. The 6rem shot 3500 with the 80gr bergers, traj was ok but the winds out west were hell on that combo. Shot a pd at 500 yds and had to lead him about 2 foot. Im looking for better... I ll take your advise alf and build the 8 twist. Thanks again

My 28" shilen prefit in 6-284 is shooting the 107smk's at 3395fps with very good accuracy. It is a hot load , but no stiff bolt lift or case head expansion.

Go with the 6-284 and you won't be disappointed.

My gunsmith Randy Dierks held the 12 target nbrsa record for many years with his 6-284 and 107 Sierras. In a 30 inch barrel the 6-284 and the 6mm-06 shoot the 107's best at around 3425 fps.Naturaly as you shorten up the barrel length you lose some velocity.RE22 powder is hard to beat in a 6-284 but I'm using H1000 and VV N170 and all 3 will make you very happy.

:)I have had three different barrels on two rifles over many years. Here is some data for 1/8 twist Krieger 4 grove. RL25 53.0 with 115 Berger Vld,54.0 of Retumbo 115 Berger Vld, 50.5 IMR7828 with the same bullets, any standard primer will work. I shoot the 115,s at around 3250 fps. Since I mostly shoot at longer ranges out to 1000 yards. The 6x284 can hold it,s own with anything out there.Accuracy is out standing even in the wind with the 105,s to 115 grain needles they fly.
