6/284 Win

Iam getting a Barrel chambered in 6mm/284.I realize it is considered a "Barrel Burner" but was wondering if anyone had a favorite load for a bit of paddock Pizza Making.

Without knowing the twist I would have no idea of what weight bullet to recommend. I consider 4831 powder to fast for even the 70 gr. bullets. I shoot a lot of surplus powders near the burn rate AA 8700 in this round. I have2 rifles in 6-284 that are tack drivers with the 70 gr. SMK`s and one with an 8 twist that does better with the heavy bullets. I thought this round would be better than the 224 TTH for coyote, but after 3 of them I`m beginning to think I was wrong, but for deer it`s great.

Can we assume this is being used for groundhogs?

If yes, this much case capacity usually calls for heavier bullets. I have used the cooler burning powders such as H-1000 and VVN-165 pushing the Hornady 105 grain AMAX for the ranges I encounter.

If you feel that the lighter bullets will be better for these varmints then you could run the Hornady 87 grain VMAX instead. Here I've found that Ramshot Magnum is the best with my rifle, highest velocity vs slightly cooler burning powder. But you can also use Hybrid 100V and VVN-160.

Regards.

I had good luck with RL22 and 107 SMK in an 8 twist Hart. As mentioned, H-1000 is a great choice and probably a better choice due to temp stability.

In my experience AA8700 was horrible for powder fouling.

Hopefully you are using the Norma reamer so you can use Lapua brass, can't use it with the 6-284 WIN reamer.

Good luck!
