6-223/6X45... need for speed...

Need for speed... yes, I know, get a bigger cartridge... barring that...

Shooting HP silhouette, this is for my ram load, (60# piece of steel at 500 yards, have to knock it down)

Using Benchmark powder, 105 VLD Berger target, 26" barrel, getting 2600fps. sub - MOA at 500.

Need a bit more speed... 3031 shows to run a little faster in the load data I can find.

Anyone load it and any other suggestions other then get a bigger cartridge (this thing shoots sweet with less recoil then my 357 lever guns)

I am thinking 6TCU but would rather stay cheap working on the load.

:)

I load on the other side of the chart, 107 SMK and 105 Lapua, neck-turned Lapua .223 brass, 24" 1:7.5 barrel. Varget can get me up to 2650 fps, with good accuracy. I have more H4895, so I tried that recently. Faster than Varget, and more noticeable problems trying to push that speed (ejector swipes, primer flattening, primer pockets opening up on one firing). So it depends on what you want to do to your brass I guess. I think 2600 to 2650 is just the upper limit with that cartridge and the heavier bullets.

Yeah... that is what I figured but am hoping someone has a "magic bullet" for it... :)

(I want to have my cake, no recoil, and eat it too...)

To be fair, it's so sweet to shoot on the first 3 animals that worst case 50% knockdown on the rams may be worth it. The C-T load is a 68gr Berger flat base that is shooting like a laser. Has a bit of wind drift but is completely manageable.

You are asking a lot from the cartridge.
Even at IHMSA ranges (200M ram) a 6TCU would leave them standing at times with out a high hit in the back. Some will say it doesn’t take a lot of energy, then I found out the were auto reset targets……I told them they better stay east of the Mississippi then.

Hit them in the ham or high in rump and they will pivot off most times if they are hand set targets.

I learned the hard way trying to make the 6x45 in to more than it is. Primer pockets die instantly. The re chambering to 6/204 idea would be easy and might get you there but there goes the cheap supply of brass..

Reviving an old thread.

There is no speed at which 6mm 105's will reliably take 500 M Rams. Pushing them faster just makes them splatter more forcefully and less rather than more energy is transferred to the Ram. This has been proven with HP Rifle Silhouette and a 6 BR in the hands of Master shooters.

I did pretty well with some 125gr 6mm bullets but the source was in Canada and exporting them to the US became onerous.

If I was to do it again, I would go with a 6.5 BR and shoot 123's nice and slow, just lobbing them in there. That still leaves you the option of 107's for the other animals.

P.S. I am building a 6X45 for Handgun Silhouette.

Howdy !

When Kaltron-Pettibone was distributor for VV powders, I asked them about their
( then new ) VV5XX series of powders.

They replied that their " 500 " series powders were specially configured to provide higher velocity level, when shooting the heavier bullets in each calibre. They quoted results from testing they performed w/ .308 Winchester.

The closest " 500 " powder to the IMR3031 you mentioned is VV530.

The VV powders website says that for 500-series powders " Nitroglycerine has been added......to get better energy content ".

Thinking out loud:
While VV530's " burn rate " might be slower than what is believed to be optimal for your application, this might allow the case to be more-completely filled; along w/ safe
pressures ? One would have to actually test Hmmm.....

The question is, why not go with a 6 TCU or a 6-223 AI?

I have three of the 6/204's and they are awesome. I used the 22/204 reamer as the 6mm reamer pilot bushing will fit on the 22 reamer, then cut the neck with a piloted neck reamer, then cut the freebore with a unithroater. Mine are all slow twist, other than one Shilen 9T.

Due to our situation on brass, the 6-223 AI or 6 TCU would be the best options if you were not sitting on a pile of good Winchester 204 brass.

What about a lighter bullet to achieve faster speeds? Ive never shot Silhouette so i dont know what it takes to knock down the rams. Im shooting 58vmax out of mine but i needed a bullet for preditors. Would a 68gr berger work?

He asked the question 2 years ago.

H335 always gave impressive speeds for me in the 6x45. It seemed to give great velocity across most bullet weights. Only time it lost out was in the 55gr area, which AA2200 was lights out. I don't have my book in front of me but I remember being around 3550-3600
