5A Douglas Contour in HS Sporter?

Jonathan Zimmerman

Silver $$ Contributor
As the title says, trying to see if it is doable to drop a 5A into an HS Sporter stock for a Remington 700. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Douglas didn't say. I asked them what minimum contour can be used for a .45 caliber bore. 5A was there answer. I'm looking for real world experience on inletting the stock. Have you done one with this contour? I want to build a lightweight deer rifle on an action and stock that I already own. Thanks

Well,
That is a very heavy contour. Ain't gonna make a lightweight rifle, maybe 8lbs?

The #4 contour would be about right. The #5 would be pushing it. The #5A wouldn't leave much forearm. #3 will leave 'gutters' beside the barrel. H-S stocks are made to fit factory barrel contours. The sporters they make for Rem 700s have barrel channels ready to except Rems magnum contour, which is real close to #4.

You are correct. My 458, 45-70, and 416 Rigby are on #5 contours. They ain't light. I only have a couple glass stocks that aren't Brown Precision and the H&S are made for the #4 or Remington mag contour.

That answers my question. Thank you both for the help. When I say lightweight, in comparison to the barrel on my smokeless muzzleloader a 5A would be light. Looks like I'll need a different stock. Thanks

HS precision has a big selection of stocks available from their website some would be appropriate for your choice of barrel contour. Most distributors only stock a couple of models, there are many more.
