58grn .243 in 9.25 barrel?

Would like to try the 58 grn Vmax in my .243 9.25 twist 22" barrel. Is this too fast a twist? If so how light of a bullet can I shoot with this barrel? Looking for a flat, fast pd round. Thanks, Matt.

I shot the 58 V-Max in a 9" twist, 26" 6mm Remington at 4050 fps. The groups were .4-.5. It was a stiff load of Varget and retained ~2000 fps at 500 yards. My favorite crow load.

I shot the 55-62g bullets with stiff loads of Win 760 or AA2700 using a fed primer usually 3800 fps in a 22" barrel, 9 1/4 twist. You should expect accuracy less than 1/2" with these bullet weights.


The 60g Sierra is an exceptional coyote bullet. Sight in at 200, aim at the top of their back at 300, dead yote.

My first varmit gun was a 110 savage package gun.I started reloading right after I got it and it would shoot from the 58 gr's all the way up to 100 gr's great.I've actually tried some of the 58's in my 6br with a 1in12 it doesn't shoot real small groups but the coyote's will be just as dead.Depending on what you want to do, the vmax is a real good bullet.

The limitation is on the length of the bullet and the longer the bullet the faster the twist is needed. The shorter light weight bullets work fine in faster twist barrels. The only limitation is speed. Shoot them too fast and they can disintegrate. Hornady says that much over 3500 FPS with the 58gr Vmax may cause it to blow up in flight and the faster the twist the more likely it is.

My son has a 243 VLS Remington with a 9 1/8 twist barrel, and we blew up the Hornady 58 grainers, went to the 55 Noslers and have never looked back. The Nosler is slightly thickner right under the polymer tip, and that makes a lot of difference when you get over 4,000 FPS.

I've launched the 58 V-Max to 4150fps in my Savage. They held together just fine.

Varmint Al did a analysis of the Noslers and the shape of the jacket is such that it can handle 420,000 rpm or 5200 fps from a 9 twist.
