I've built quite a few rifles off the 580 and 581. Now if paying $350 I would save extra money and probably go with a Tikka, CZ or Bergara. All shoot great, better mounting system, Better trigger from the factory, better support with stocks and accessories. My first HM2 build on the last 4 rds I had with me moved out to 150yds and shot a 4rd group that was pretty decent. This is a 581 action with John Reed magazine, reworked trigger at 2lbs, Boyd's un-inletted stock I inletted and reshaped quite a bit, Anschutz 1502 barrel. Pillered and bedded, barrel floated after first 2inches.
I bought a Tikka T1x thinking I would start building on that action or the CZ457 as I like the changes they have made as well. Problem is the Tikka after a couple mods shoots so darn good I hate to pull it apart. Some of my friends bought them then and they are also crazy accurate.
Some of my Rems
1. 580 22lr with Anschutz Barrel and SA stock
2. 582 all Factory, Have since put on a 540XR stock
3. 581 22lr, Green Mountain Barrel I Milled, and turned then chambered with a modified 52D reamer, Savage Anschutz Stock, Trigger reworked, John Reed Magazine, Shoots awesome. Very impressed with the GM barrel and how it milled. Rust blued after pic.
4. 581 22lr, Anschutz stock reworked, reworked trigger, factory barrel headspace tightened up and glued in as I do all of them, no pins, Barrel has also since been shortened to 20", Uncle Mikes sling swivel cups. My favorite Squirrel getter I grab for 90% of the time And I have a few decent and far more expensive squirrel rifles. Total invested was about $90 and time. They don't always have to cost a lot.
5. 581 17HM2, Anschutz 1502 barrel and rest of info in the beginning. Dont ask me to repeat that group because I cant. LOL The stars were in complete alignment that day and I believe I had a rabbits foot in my pocket, just came from church and was very lucky. Don't get me wrong, It does shoot.
You can tell I like these actions and I have done a few more.
