50mm objective mounting options

Hi All,

I'm getting ready to set up my first rifle and need some help on optics setup options. Rifle is a Savage 12FVSS .308. I'd like to eventually work my way up to 600+ yard shots for paper punching. The scope I'm considering is a Nikon Monarch UCC 6-24x50.

First off, are the one piece Weaver style rails better than the picatinny style rails based on the finer Weaver slot spacing? Do the Weaver style rails give finer adjustability based on the closer spacing? What is a good brand of rail and with what brand of rings is it good with, probably need a 25 MOA slope for longer distances I presume)? I'll probably have to get taller rings due to the 50mm objective, but how much higher do I need to go and keep the scope as close to the barrel as possible?

I've been looking for a good article on rifle scope mounting systems and "how-to's", and 50mm objective clearance problems, but they must be buried in forums.

Thanks in advance.

Hello.

I like TPS rings lately. Badger Ord. are great too, of course.

I have a couple of sets of TPS TSR rings and love them.
They don't leave ring marks either, which is a added bonus to me.

Warne, Farrell, Badger all make good Picatinny rails, if you decide to go that way.
I did, and chose a 20 MOA Badger rail.
This rail stays on forever, but I switch scopes back and forth constantly.

Hope this helps. Good shooting.

,Not sure if Nikon has released the "new" Moarchs yet, but SWFA should have them soon.)
