500-1000 rifle. Savage model 12 LRP in 260 Remington?

Looking to get into some practical long range shooting competitions in my area soon. In need of a gun as I don't own a suitable weapon at this point aside from a 300 wby but it's not allowed. 300 win mag is cut off. These competitions are prone position with bipod and sling.

Been doing some research but this is an area I know little about. Was curious what the general consensus on this rifle, and caliber, was towards my intended goal. I am a new but avid reloader. Barrel life is one consideration, case life to an extent, but my primary goal is an accurate gun for shooting 500-1000 yards that won't break the bank. With a 2 year old son and daughter due Nov 8th, money is tighter than usual. I intend to take my Burris Black Diamond 8-32 off my 50 bmg and use on this long distance target rifle.

Lastly, would I be better off just getting a model 700 police 308? Or does the 260 rem have better performance? Thanks for any insights you may share.

Dan, is this type of shooting that you want to do going to be timed events? If so you may need a rifle with a drop mag system among other things. I am not trying to put a fly in the ointment, but there are plenty of used rifles out there, Savage's or Remington's. Both of these rifles can be outfitted with Pre-fit barrels and barrelnuts. Many things to think about besides the cartridge. I shoot many different ones, but if I was shooting a Practical Match, it would be with a race cartridge and not a .308. I have a .308 for LR F/Class and a .308 for Tac Match's that are .308 only. Oh, and I am a Savage FAN.... ;D

Not sure about timed or not. Just heard of the opportunity in my area. The distances are known from what I hear and sounds like 243-300 win mag is popular range. I have no insight into this type of shooting but very interested in it. Want to get a decent rifle so I can have a chance to be successful as my skill set grows. A fella within an hour of me is soon opening his land up for a 1200 yard range. Nothing near me like that so I don't have firm opinions on what caliber, gun, etc is most appropriate.

What's a race cartridge?

Thanks for the reply at any rate. I appreciate your time and thoughts. This is a significant investment and I hope not to have buyers remorse by getting an ill fitting tool for the task at hand.

.260, 7mm-08, or 308 will fit your needs. The Remington Police .308 would work well for you. With a Remington you can slowly upgrade it if necessary since aftermarket parts are plentiful for the 700.

With your tight budget you can't afford to buy a Salvage. ;)

Erik C as a Savage shooter I look forward to seeing you shoot on the USA f/open team this year :)Oh wait you didnt make it ???

Fixed it

Thanks, you know what I meant. I fixed it. ;)

To the OP.

All factory rifles are a risk. Borescoping the barrel will help cull out a bad one. I have seen Remington's with crooked chambers, so watch out for that and you'll be fine.

260 smokes a 308 in just every category, but my advice is go with a case with a 30 degree shoulder like a 6.5 Creedmoor or better yet 6.5x47

I use a 6.5x47 for 600-1000 yards. It's performance is great! It is throated for 140 grain class bullets and a 1-8 twist barrel....28" long.

I like to get on that bet about Eric!

Dan, look around and you will find a Remington 700 Police at a good price second hand. I've seen a few of them lately. The race cartridge thing is something that is faster and more forgiving with better B.C. bullets then a .308 for this type of shooting. I shoot a 6MM Competition Match mostly, highly accurate, great barrel life, shooting 105-115 weight bullets. I also shoot the other cartridges mentioned here, but prefer the 6CM.

Ok guys, so how many takers do I have? I might even take the week off if you guys put up enough money! ;D

I did not try out for main team. I attended one of the four tryouts for the final team before I had to withdraw from the team. I made the development team and went to Ireland to shoot Creedmoor cup as a member of the USA F-Open team and have two good medals to prove it. Family and business issues forced me to withdraw and I do not regret that decision at all.

Was that gold in the individual or team match at the creedmoor cup? Just curious. Good shooting regardless I'm sure.

I'll attest that this is what happened with Erik and the US Open Team

2 John Brewer
3 Robert Bock
4 Rick Jensen
5 Don Nagel
6 Jim Murphy
7 John Campbell
8 Bob Mead
9 Larry Taite
10 Conner Murphy
11 Erik Cortina
12 Kevin McKenna
13 Liam Fenion
14 Stephen Hogan
15 Joe Melia

This reminds me of the old days when I was on my house phone and heard another conversation going on in the background.

Anyone reading this have an opinion on using 260 rem for a 500-1000 yard gun. Prone with a bipod is all I know as far as the competitions. This is an area I have very little insights into and would appreciate any and all inputs (That don't involve Eriks competition results).

Thanks for any thoughts.

HAHAHA - so sorry about the hijack!!

.260 would be good for a tactical type competition! It would put you into Open in F-Class if you ever wanted to try that, but for your immediate purpose, it will be just as sufficient/effective as any other 6.5!
