50 bmg sako type extractor replacement

Whether it was my fault or not I have an extractor that has failed and need a replacement.

I'll be tearing the extractor assembly out shortly once I figure out exactly how it comes apart.

Needless to say, the unit will be covered up in a heavy poly bag and mounted on a vise prior to diassembly.

Once that is done someone is going to have to create a new one and then get it heat treated. Anyone feeling sporty or have a good 50 bmg 'smith in mind?

Thanks,

Ed

Why not get one from the company that made the action?

Well.....interesting you say that as you would think that would be the simple solution. I have asked for a replacement with no response after 30 days.

The original build took forever, like multiple years, and I finally had to go the legal route trying to get things back, let along completed.

That said, before I burn this guy/business down I am looking for options.
Thanks,

Ed

Why not tell us who the manufacturer is? Do you go to Napa and ask the counter guy for an alternator for a big block and refuse to tell him what kind of car it's for?

I can understand not wanting to flame the mfr but with the help theyve been your post shoulda started with: since ______ really sucks i need a new extractor for an action they made right around the time i had to get a lawsuit to get my stuff- but i still need a part.

I'm not refusing anybody anything. I'm giving the manufacturer one last benefit of a doubt. That is all. It is a very small scale manufacturer, not a large name non-issue request for a replacement part so that is the issue.

I was looking for someone that might be an option as a "copy," heat treat, and replace.

Agreed. I will add more clarity in the next few days. I apologize to the group as a whole for not having this issued nailed down in advance with specific photos etc.

Ok all, thanks for your patience. I talked to another owner of this particular action, "xtreme machining" and for the 50 action the sako style extractor has been problematic. He told me the 4 owners he knows all have similar problems with the extractor failing. He thinks the material is too rigid and brittle.

So, I guess the next step will be to remove the parts and "glue" them together to standardize the dimensions. Once that is done I guess it is time to experiment with various materials.

Anybody have any ideas on a good material to start with?

Also, is it possible to go with something NOT heat treated? like a stainless steel and just assume a use limitation (i.e. 1x125 round match and change out?)

If the shop is that small I'll bet he got the extractors from someone else. It's been a couple of years since I've had one in the shop but you might contact McMillan Rifles about the extractor they use in their action. Maybe BAT Machine.

That ^^^^^^^ is a very good idea! Last resort would be to make one from scratch.

I just checked a McMillan owners manual and they look "close" but I don't think so.

I have talked with the folks at BAT on a few occasions for my .308 type actions.

I'll give them both a call but I think these were actually made by the individual that developed and marketed his action.

Take a picture w/your smart device.
Enlarge the picture.
Print the picture.
Take dimensions from bolt machine cuts & broken extractor.

Now you have dimensions/measurements-a blueprint.

Machine a 1/2 dozen extractors from O1/oil hardened tool steel.
Heat treat to 1/2-3/4 hardness.

Install extractor
Shoot

The radius in the bottom of the extractor cut is for?

Longitudinal drilling for the spring & plunger??
