5.56 and IMR 4198

Anyone else use this combo?Attached is two 10 shot groups shot off hand at 20 yards. Shot using a Colt CE-1000 with Iron Sights and a 1-7 twist barrel all factory. Love to see how accurate a cheap set up can be with some patience and a whole lot of OCD. I will be mounting a scope soon to test out to 200 yards. With Chrony data and all that good stuff. Will do a follow up.

The load is:
PPU Brass
WSR primer
55gr el cheapo FMJ-BT
20.5gr 4198

I had no short shucking or failures of any kind. Brass landing in the same spot as factory 55 grainers(Aguila .223)The smaller group is the handloads, larger is the Aguila.Curious about your results.

You did good shooting off hand.

I use/used IMR 4198-20.5 grs with a Win. 55 gr fmjbt. The bullets were 2nds and grouped any where from 1.5" to 3" @ 100 yards. The Savage axis & M16A1 carbine produced about the same accuracy. There are better bullets available.

Better bullets will produce tighter groups off the bench when you get a scope mounted.

I have some 55gr VMax sorted. Just thought I would use the cheap stuff to check charge weights. Have some Bergers on backorder.

If you still want to do it on the cheap and use 55 gr FMJ, see if you can find bulk Wolf 55 gr FMJ

Still a standard fmj with all the limitations that come with it but well made and accurate for what it is and cheaper than Hornady.

Any 55 gr Sierra SP or HP will outshoot an fmj

I have been told(by several of our customers) campro 55gr fmj-bt are the cats ass. We have a customer who shoots them exclusively out of a MVP and consistantly groups sub moa at 200yards. Campro is a Canadian company and we can’t keep the 223 and 308’s on the shelf at my girls store. I might grab a box and sort base to ogive. When the next order comes in. Check out their consistently.
