4917 fps at 50,400 CUP in 17 Rem

Holy Smoke Batman! 4917 fps at 50,400 CUP is what the Hodgdon 2021 Annual Manual has for the 17 Remington with that tiny Hornady 15.5g NTX bullet and a MAX load of Benchmark at 25.9C grains (Compressed). That should be fun on turtles and squirrels.

Don't blink.
That's smokin'.

That would be terribly flat shooting...speed kills, but it also has a cost! That’s a fair amount (26 grains) of powder through that small bore cross section. With less than 19 grains of powder I have gotten my 17M4 just into the 4600’s with a moly coated 15 grain Berger, but it’s really hard on brass. I loaded a few 17-222 rounds yesterday with the 20 VMax and BM, I will have to try a few with the NTX.

I have loaded 20s up to 4200 in my 17 Rem and noticed something different when shooting crows out to 200-300yds. With most calibres you have a hard time seeing the crow explode. With the fast 17Rem, I got to see the crow explode out there, before the recoil (what there is of it) moved the 16x scope off the crow.

I did a load ramp with CFE223 and 25 grain Vmax. I got some impressive speeds. 3900-4000 FPS is plenty for me, and a bit easier on the throat.

I question if the bullets will hold together at velocities much over 4000. Certainly the plastic tips are unlikely to last the trip to the varmint. Secondly, what chronograph performs repeatedly above 4000 fps. I have had four different chronographs and none of them are repeatable with 17 caliber bullets over 4000fps. Lab Radar is not the one either, I called them and they told me their radio frequency is not accurate over 3900. We have gotten some readings over 4000, with the .204 ruger (32gr Z-Max), but only once.

I don't think Hodgdon would be publishing the load data if the bullets were coming apart. Every load listed is 4800 fps or higher, with two other loads over the 4850 fps mark. 5000 fps has got to be in reach.
