4895 trial in Shayne's Dasher--SD=2

James Phillips helped Shayne work up a new load for his 6 Dasher using new brass. James tuned the 700 Long Action. He cleaned the barrel and sent the Shehane Tracker stock to Greyfox (Rick Fox) for a new bedding job. In the meantime, James was prepping brass. When it all came together James took it to the range.

Barrel by Tim Claunch, Memphis

Shayne picked his rifle up this week-end and Sunday evening we took it out for a trial run. I hooked up my Magneto Speed and the SD for a 5 shot string was 2 fps.

We were shooting in very breezy conditions as a cold front was moving through.
Shayne finishing the five shot string

I shot this fireforming new hydro-formed never fired brass.

For shooting 1,000 yds we may have to move her up to the next accuracy node, maybe 2980 fps.

No wonder Shayne has a smile on his face with a 5 shot string SD of 2 fps

300 yds
This is two shots to the head and one heart shot at 300 yards

Only way I could hide Shayne's smile

It was a GOD's GIFT day. 70's, clear, bright sunshine, cool breeze, and the Fall colors of the Tennessee hills starting to highlight God's creation. Deer, turkey, coyotes, fox, hawks all on the property.

Absolutely a BEST of TIMES at the DOME.

If you move that rifle up to the next node you're going to trash brass. At 32.0 of H4895 it left a nice swipe mark on the case heads. It just can't handle those pressures even when I was shooting RL15 and Varget thru it.

Well, RL 15 is getting low here, and looking for another powder that is plentiful around here. Looks lime I'm trying this powder next.
I have screwed on my 1.25 30" Brux barrel, and have gotten it broken in. Tim did a heck off chamber on it, matching my other barrel' s chambers.

Edit: is this powder harder on barrels?

Great shooting!!! has anyone ever tried imr 4895???? in their dasher??? I have a big supply of it. thanks shive

Allen,

I have H-4895 quite a bit in the dasher, it is great in the fall and spring it gets a little touchy when the temps go up. I have shot some nice groups with it in the Brux barreled Dasher.

It should work, just have to give it a try. Thats the only IMR powder with same number that is slower than the Hodgdon version. Its a tad slower burn rate than H4895.

that looks like a wonderful place to shoot ,,,great facilities and wonderful companionship,,,,I wish I could join you,,,,you are right about 4895 ,,,most folks think Varget is the only thing that works, hahah,,,,years ago when first tinkering with a BR and then later a Dasher,,,I shot everything available and it seemed with a good bbl you could get just about any of the modern powders to work,,,,(Rx-15/Varget/4895/140/540/etc,,,) the boys out west (Montana) seem to get good results with 4895 also,,,I have used more Rx-15 because I stumbled onto a good deal on a wheel barrow load of it (wink),,,,my all time fav was VV-540,,,but it is very difficult to find and a little pricy,,,,keep on testing and experimenting ,,,,that is what makes us all better shooters....Roger

Roger, expiper

wow,,,that would be great,,,,one of these days in the spring when a young (or old ) mans fancy turns to shooting ,,,,I will get a hold of UUU,,,,,I will bring my old shootin iron and try and get sighted in !!! ,,,Merry Christmas to you and yours,,,,Roger
