45ACP to .224

You might check @ www.saubier.com as well as www.smallcaliberclub.com. Some of those guys are "heavy" into wildcats. Some have probably already "been there, done that".

Ill have to check out that one. Havnt seen it before.

For some reason I miss Quoted above about the Pessure limits of the 45ACP parent case. Its actually quite lower than stated above. The 44 Auto Mag and 357 Auto mag is what I was going to design this case off of originally. Those cases list at just under 37,000. the 45ACP Under 21,000
That wont get much speed. Not that speed is the goal by anymeans.. Its just tinker toy for the most part. Something not run of the mill... and this for sure is not run of the mill.
Right now It seems I cant find any of more popular cases around, never mind the more obscure like the Auto Mag.

Anyway just wanted to set the post straight.

I thought about something similar. I was considering necking down a 450 busmaster case to 6mm. Like a big diameter BR with capacity hopefully just a bit more than a dasher. The cases have small primer pockets with standard flash holes. The rebated .500 case means everything would be custom including form dies. After doing the math I decided that was way too much money to make a case that probably wouldn't shoot with a dasher anyway.

Don't laugh but I already want a 45/224!.....LOL ;D It looks like it would be way fun to shoot! If this thing was perfected I'd be first inline to buy one.... ;) ;D Most of us could get 45 brass fairly easy I think. Rtheurer...you da man! ;)

Hey!

Was doing some Google searching to see if anyone had made a .45-224 and came across this forum!

I will be undertaking a few new projects with this season's tax return money. A .45-70http://www.ch4d.com/ AR-10, a .338 Lapua AR, and making a .45-224 conversion kit for my SAR K2 .45ACP. ;D

So I was psyched to see someone else working on a similar project. So I was just wondering if you've had any good progress? Also, I have a few questions.

Are you annealing the resized brass?

Do you have a chamber reamer yet?

Do you have any reloading dies yet?

If so to either of those questions, where did you get them?

What velocity to you expect to get, and what twist rate do you plan on for your barrel?

I read something on here about .45 super cases? Have you looked into that yet?

I am really interested in this, and I figure two heads are better than one. Feel free to email me @ kingofsteves@Gmail.com or to look me up on Facebook. (Steven Boyde).

Also, I was originally planning on making a 10-.224 (.224 boz) and found a place that makes dies and reamers. They might be able to help you with yours, unless you plan on making your own. Www.ch4d.com

Thanks for sharing, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Greatings.
Im at a pause right now as Im working out of Town per say... Wont return till early summer.

This is a side line project for me so I have been just putzing around getting an idea of what I want and how its all going to come togther.

Your Questions:

Its very clear to me that I need to start anneling about the time i get it to around 30 cal or so. It starts to work harden and crack after that. Alot of care needs to go into this process so far.

No Reamer yet as i wanted to get the necking down process in order. After I see what is working and what is not working ill get the reamer made based of what is the most succesful necking down proccess. ie. long neck or short,,, shoulder angle. ec ect.

Along with the Chamber reamer will come a matching FL Sizing Die reamer.

Ill most likely shoot the 55gr on down in 22Cal so a 1:10 or maybe slower should be plenty.. Or what ever pops up for sale between now and then. Right now Im just looking at a Shilen Chrome moly barrel to get things rolling.

Actually I was looking at the 44 Auto Mag case first. Then I thought the 45ACP with its plentiful Brass might be a better way to go. If you look at the Pressure capacity for both the formentioned cases there is a stark contrast in what each case can handle as far as chamber pressure. That may equate to higher velocity ( but not always) . So again I would like to get ahold of some 44 Auto Mag brass to see how that works as well.
Its been pointed out to me that other cases have and are being made off pistol cartridges with dies and reamers aviable... Heck what fun would that be??? Ha!

Annealing a case with the height of a 45ACP and not softening the base is gonna be tricky.....

Modeling clay around the base and or possibly inside the case (to your anneal height) may give you some help in the form of a heatsink. It would probably be a 1 shot deal needed for every case though and some form of flux to keep the clay from baking on the brass, Then there's how to get the clay OUT thing to deal with.....lol

In the plumbing trade there are a few product out there for this type of application. One is like a Gel and the other a blnket type heat sink. Might have to gander around the wholesale house when I get home.

Howdy !

.45Auto case is basically the bottom-end of .30-06 brass. Perhaps not cost effective, but.... you could neck down .308 ( family ) brass to .224" cal, letting the excess brass extrude out the top of the case forming die. You'd then cut-off & trim to desired case' oal.

The process might result in the upper case walls being a bit thicker than on the .45 ACP brass. But you'd be swapping a small amount of case capacity difference in return for some pretty robust cases.

You'd also be in for an inside neck ream & outside neck turn ( perhaps things you're doing that already ).

It's all good !
