45acp primer question

I picked up a bunch of federal 45 brass at the range the other day. When I got home and started looking at them they are small primers. I will be dumping them in my scrap bucket. How many different companies producd 45's with small primers. Glad I didn't just dump them in with my present supply of 45 brass. That would cause real headaches in a progressive press.is this a bigger problem than I realized?

Some of the small primer brass started with an effort to use lead-free primers for indoor training use. Some folks tried the brass for reloading and some folks thought it was better in some contexts. YMMV

Some examples were to use a common primer for logistics purposes.

Winchester made WinClean, others called them NT for Non Toxic. Winchester, Federal, CCI and Speer all did this at one point or another.

Quick… throw them away. They are Blasphemy!!!

There is no greater PITA then having to sort through 45ACP brass to find the random small primer cases that throws the monkey wrench in reloading on progressive press.

This falls under the same cosmic order / harmony as BBQ and Banana Pudding, Crawfish and Cold Beer, and Harleys and Leather. Everybody knows that 45ACP use Larger Primers and big bullets. My brother says there is no replacement for displacement… holds true for muscle cars and handguns :)

On top of that the primer holes are smaller. Wich cause the primer to stick on decap pin and gets pulled back into shell case, sometimes not all the way and jams up progressive reloading.

Or you can box them up and send them to someone who likes them. When I stopped reloading for the pistols I used only SRP acp brass. That way I only needed to stock up on one primer size for the .357, 9mm and .45. Also simplified the progressive press setup. My rifles are all small primer as well.

And, yes, they are a PITA when mixed with LRP brass.

This and also that progressive press for 45ACP setup is disbursing/seating large pistol primers that won’t fit into small primer pocket.

There is nothing that will get you using French faster than getting a SPP 45ACP case when you are going good on a progressive press. Also 45GAP mixed in that you miss picking out of range brass. Should be a special place for whoever thought either one was a good idea.

Speer also has some small primer brass.

If you don't want them, send them to me!

I separate them after tumbling.
Have had zero issues with a depriming pin between small and large primer using the Lee 4 die set on a Lee 4 hole turret press.

Weather you use them or not you need to look at your brass every time you load it. If your brass hits the ground, it has a chance of landing with or near someone's SPP brass. Separate the SPP brass and save it. Some day in the future you will have enough to run a batch of them and as long as you keep them separate there will be no problem. Then if the LPPs get scarce you will have at least a small batch to keep shooting. It cost nothing to save them.

For those loading +P+ loads, The small primer brass takes more pressure. I use the small primer brass for this kind of loads, 185s at 1200 and 200s at 1100.

24 lb recoil spring in my Kimber.

I have been a brass hoarder for years. My local range had a huge turn over rate of people. Not many reload at all so everything gets left on the ground. The only maker I have not seen that has a small primer is Remington. ALL of the manufacturers were putting them out during the bat flu era. It did not matter if the cases were nickle plated either. It used to be that nickle plated was always lpp. Not anymore.

The whole sp thing was logistics. There were not large primers available during the bat flu. Just small primers. The primer hole was the only change manufactures needed to change over during forming. So it was left alone and most everything got small primers that could.

On one of Hornadys pod cast they even mentioned that during the bat flu most all manufacturers were swapping products between them all. If you come from a manufacturing background like I have you will know how set ups and change overs take time and the waste involved after a change over. Thats were a lot of the blem bullets come from. It takes some time to get a setup to run properly.

It was a huge cost savings for the manufacturers during the last few years when they only had to change the amount of priming compound during primer manufacturing.

The first time that I encountered the SP in 45ACP was during one of our earlier Zombie Apocalypse/Political Panic/Supply Shortage crisis following Sandy Hook. Walmart was selling 45ACP ammo with SP.

I use small primer on my 45ACP so that if there is a mixup on any brass it won't accidentally set of your primers. Loading small and encounter a large primer round, no problem. But loading large and get a small one on the primer seating station could lead to big trouble.
