458 american or 458X1.5 barnes

i dont know if this is even the right area to post this so if i am in violation please move to the correct area. thanks

i just got a savage 110 really cheap at a local pawn shop and it is currently chambered in 243. it is a long action and small shank. i was looking at the brownells web site and they have replacement barrels for this rifle in 458 win mag. the questions i have are as follows

- can i shoot 458 american or 458X1.5 barnes out of a 458 win mag chamber much like a 44 special out of a 44 mag?

- i will be hunting with sub sonic loads at a max distance of 150 yards so bullet choice will be important. what bullets would you recommend?( looking to go real heavy around 550-600 grains @ 950 to 1000 fps)

-where can i find load data for reduced 458 win mag loads or am i better off going with the shorter cartridges?

thanks for your input . i am going to eventually suppress this rifle and it will be a single shot so bullet length will not be to important. also the main reason i am doing this is because i can get it built very cheaply and in no time at all. i just don't want to jump in to far without knowing where i am headed. thanks again

I would just load up the .458 win. mag cases . There is a lot of information on reduced loads and there is also a large selection of heavy cast bullets to fit your needs. A .458 can be loaded down to duplicate black powder .45-70 loads. I believe Lyman and Hodgdon list a reduce load selection.

This was attempted during the Vietnam war with the Model 70 in .458 as a sniper rifle .

It did not work .

thanks guys i will get after it soon. one question is why it did not work in Vietnam? 500 grain bullet through the boiler or control room should work well?

I use Beartooth 525 gr hard cast with a large meplate in my 45/70 with 14 gr of Trailboss and it hurts!!!! I'm sure you could load this same bullet in the 458win ans get subsonic with it. FRJ

Not too many advise a Magnum case in a small shank. You would need a controlled feed bolt face and accompanying ejector which is different than the rest. I thought that maybe you can open up a .473 to .532 and forget the ejector, just pluck it out, and use it as a single shot. I would consult with Fred at Sharp Shooter Supply on it as he has just about done it all on Savage platforms. As was mentioned previously a hard cast heavy weight with a wide flat meplat should kill well at sub sonic velocities. Get the twist right! Maybe the .45-70 or .450 Alaskan would be easier. Not sure about a rimmed in a Savage.

Yes it can be done. You will need a magnum push feed bolt head. also long mag box and follower. The shorter cases can be fired in the Win Mag chamber safely but you will likely lose accuracy. I have a 458x2" and it is very accurate.

ok so for something on a different path sort of how about the 458 socom? seems better suited to what i am looking to do. any experience or thoughts?
