458 AccRel

Just started working with a 458 AccRel (Accurate Reloading). Preliminary internet search yielded very little in terms of reloading data. I was hoping that someone here had worked with one and would be willing to share.

It is essentially a shortened, blown out RUM. Although I have not verified, my understanding is that it provides +10% capacity over the Lott.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Two things to consider:

- Contact Saeed the owner of the Accurate Reloading website and ask him for some data or contacts for folks who are shooting it. You can join and post on those forums also.

- I did some interpolation with the .458 Lott loads and the case capacity of the .458 A.R. (as it's referred to) to find that the initial Lott data will provide excellent starting loads from which you can work your way up safely.

What you need for African hunting is a 500gr bullet at around 2400fps with a fast for caliber twist. No need for higher velocity since 2400fps seems to perform just as well as a faster load.

I don't disagree with that at all. I was just hoping that someone had already gone down the road of RL-15 and the 500gr RN. No sense in re-inventing if someone else has already done a good job on it previously.

with a fast for caliber twist

Just for fun I ran some numbers for the Hornady RN Interbond. Even with 1:18" twist rate the SG (Berger) is 3.20 so any faster twist rate is really superfluous.

Switching to a RN FMJ the SG is 2.85 using the same 1:18" twist rate.

Switching to the Barnes RN solid, the SD is 2.08 with the same twist rate.

Every rifle and barrel combination has the potential to be different from another. Doing the work up is the safest and best method for achieving the load which works in your rifle. If you use the starting loads for .458 Lott in the .458 A.R. you will be right in the area for using Re-15.

Enjoy the process!;)

You are missing the point about the twist. A faster twist helps prevent bullet yaw and increases penetration. We ran tests with solids on elephant skulls. Same bullet and velocity. Faster twist gave better penetration. I would go with a 1-14 or even 1-12 with a 500gr .458. Also, velocity much faster than around 2400 does not increase penetration that much and recoil is greatly increased
