45 acp bullet lube

my neighbor bought a 45 acp and wants me to load for it ---i have reloaded rifle and shotgun for 50 years but never a pistol ctg--he has a box of missouri bullets that are hard cast lead and measure 452--they are not lubed --can they be loaded and shot without lube ---will powder coating solve the problem--please help--i need the advice of someone who knows what to do --roger

Or just liquid alox like White Label or Lee. Pour a little in a pie pan, shuffle the bullets in it until covered, take bullets out of pan, place on wax paper to dry and load. Works really well at .45 ACP velocities and is inexpensive.

There is also this;

Buy lubed cast bullets, I do by the thousands in 45 Colt. Then ya don't have to do any lubing bullets at all. But I did cast a bunch of 500 gr and lubed them in the old Lyman luber-sizer, with alox & beeswax. You can also buy bullets already powder coated...give yours away and buy them already lubed or powder coated. Easy...

With the Lee alox and other stuff like it he's going to get smoke with each shot, which I didn't like.. There's a guy on cast bullets that sells powder for a reasonable cost and goes through the process. John Deere green is about the easiest for a beginner. The first post in the link is ordering info, and the 3rd is the process.

and you may need to clean them with something first, have to research that. After touching the bullets and them sitting around for a while they may have oils on them that will hinder the powder sticking.

Easiest would be to tumble lube them. If you PC them, you might have to resize them as the PC will add to the diameter of the bullet. TL them and then let them dry for a few days before using.

i will post a pic of the box and just noticed tht they are hi-tek coated --does that mean they are ready to shoot--i cant believe how ignorant i am of pistol loading hahah--thank you one and all for the great advice and insight ---roger
ps--im trying to get the pic over to my pc--i spilled coffee on it and the keyboard doesnt work right --no caps or the dot key hahaha

I don't load for anyone else, and I don't shoot anybody else's loads in anything other than their guns (i.e. not mine.)

Despite the fact that I've preached this to me new shooter friends when they started reloading, I've seen 2 pistols destroyed by people shooting others' reloads (Springfield agreed to repair one, and the reloader covered the other one, so no loss on the part of the shooter aside from a bit of time.)

The difference between individuals reloads and commercial reloaders (which usually comes up) is that commercial reloaders have liability insurance, making it much easier to recoup any loss from a mistake.

Ready to load. They say hi-tek coated on the box. As for those that need powder coat go here. I believe all he has is proven and tested to coat bullets. Call him up and takes order over the phone old school.

I've used Smoke's powder (vendor mentioned above) in fact I won't use anything else. I have Traffic Purple (actually more pink), Carolina Blue, Wine Red, Flame Red, and John Deere Green. I have used the purple, blue, and wine red for cast rifle boolits and all covered well following Smoke's recommendations.

Disclaimer: I don't cast or powdercoat bullets.

A lot of people here (California, though I'd assume it is wider-reaching) are using powder coatings sourced from Harbor Freight. I can see why at $8/lb. Colors are limited to black and white though.
