45-70

I am a fan of the 45/70. It's fun to lob some lead at times. Though I don't shoot it nearly as much as I used to now that I have a monster .500 S&W barrel for my H&R. I happened to find a 700gr mold for the .500, and that had a drastic impact on the 45's usage.

I haven't shot it as much as I used to but we used to shoot 2 or 3 blackpowder silhouette shoots a month. I will get back into it when they add another weekend to the month but right now their is to much other gun stuff going on.

Hunted off and on with a .45/70 Marlin for about eight or nine years. Had a lot of fun with that rifle, and it can absolutely slam a mulie! Sold it to a friend of mine last year. He's enjoying it too.

I have two 45-70's that I shoot at ASSRA matches 2 or 3 times a year - at Etna Green, Indiana. One Sharps and one REM Rolling Block. Lots of fun. Badlands

I had a t/c contender with a ssk barrel that we would shoot steel out to 450yds. major drop. it would hold a 1in group at 100.

I enjoy the he-- out of mine it could be a modified guide gun or a marlin cowboy or a shiloh sharps Old Reliable. I usually take one along to shoot while my bench guns are cooling down. Lots of bullet and lots of fun.

If you like the 45/70, the .500 S&W H&R is worth a look. Only $250 brand new, and it makes big ol holes in just about anything. It makes watermelons disappear and does about the same to woodchucks if you can get close enough. I let my little bro put a 700gr cast bullet into a woodchuck in my dad's garden over the weekend. Beats a high velocity V-Max hands down! Just nothing left but pieces.

It's probably the most enjoyable rifle I own, as those massive slugs just do damage.

Thanks when I got that one the line was pretty long I think their wait was about 2 years. I also play with these at times

I'm a fan of the 45-70, 45-90. I shoot them with black powder and hand cast bullets :-) Here's a couple of pics of my two favorites. One's a 1874 Sharps business rifle with a 34 in. tube, MVA scope and mounts in 45-70.
The other is a Browning 1885 Creedmoor in 45-90. Bone stock.
I shoot these two out to 500yds

I should also get some pics posted of my 1895 Marlin, My Trap Door and my contender with a ported 12in barrell. The Condender is a complete gas to shoot with black and 500grn, bullets.

Louisiana changed their blackpowder deer season last year to allow single shot 45/70 replicas. Much more fun that hassling with black powder rifles--faster to reload, easier to clean, and safer if you don't shoot coming back to the camp--overall more civilized. Just need to learn the ballistics and range of these heavier bullets. The new Hornady tipped bullets seem like a nice component as well .

Nice rifles guys. ;)
My usual blackpowder load is 70 grs. of Goex Cartridge Grade...but here lately I've been tossing around the idea of loading some up with 3f KIK powder. Anyone have any experience with it?

I havent tried KIK 3F but have used Swiss 3F I get alot more velocity out of Swiss than Goex my usual load is about 68gr Swiss 1.5 F with a .030 fiber wad with about .030 compression in my gun the Swiss seems to shoot better with little compression compared to Goex I usually compress the Goex loads 1/8 to 1/4"

Haven't tried the 1.5 f Swiss. Have used 2f and 3f though...good stuff. Still have a couple pounds of 2f on hand but its for one of my muzzleloaders that like it. Another one of their grades I use is the Swiss Null B. It's a priming powder that's finer than their 4f or Goex's 4f...fast stuff. Use it to prime my little longrifle. Had a brainfart here a few months back and thought I'd try a duplex load using the Null B and Goex Cartridge Grade in the 45-70 and the 45-60 levergun. Got a pretty clean burn thru each that day...but haven't sat down since to shoot any amount to see the results. It did spark my interest mainly for the levergun.
Anyway...I'll get back on the KIK topic...here's a link to some comparison testing using Goex, KIK and Elephant powder in 4 different muzzleloaders that you might find interesting.

Yes, I have 2 45-70's - a Marlin 1895 and a Baikal side x side double. The Marlin is amazingly accurate for a pumpkin slinger; it holds 1.5 moa out to 200yds with a 400gn Speer. Haven't worked out the double yet - still having some experimentation to do with regulation. But it seems to like heavy, cast bullets! And nothing beats bullet weight & dia! Novice.

Here's a pic of a bullet I was shooting a couple of weeks ago in my 45-90

For comparision there's a 168gr SMK, a 45-70 case and a 308 case.

It's a 625 grain cast 20-1 and lubed with SPG
