4350 & 4831 Hodgdon or IMR why one and not the other?

Hodgdon or IMR? What are the differences? What do you like and dislike? Trying to decide on a hunting load with 95 grain Ballistic Tip in a 243 Winchester. I have all four of them on hand.

there is a speed differance , slight, but the H has short cut which flows better

all4 are good powders for you, particular 4350

The two 4831s , IMR 4831 is a significantly faster powder than H4831 , they are different burn rates and dont interchange load data

.

There are slight differences in burn rates that have to be considered, but the main advantage to me is kernel size of Hodgdon powders. If powder capacity is an issue, the Hodgdon powders utilize the space more efficiently, IMO. The first 10 to 15 years of my reloading life was spent with IMR almost exclusively. Now I rarely use IMR unless I am loading "special" rounds for a couple rifles that I don't mess with a good thing. Those "special" circumstances are IMR 4350 69gr SMK 190gr in 300 WM and 4x.xgr IMR 4064 in a 308W with 168s. Off the top of my head, that is all the IMR powder I "need" right now.

It doesn't matter what we think.....how your rifle digests the load is what counts. My 300 win. mag like the Hodhdon 4831 better than IMR 4350. The Hogdon 4831 can be bought in 4831sc and 4831ssc [short cut and super short cut]. There is no difference in the three cuts the sc and ssc just meter better and help if case capacity are an issue.

I would go with H4350 for a 95gr bullet in hunting conditions. It should give you about max muzzel velocity (H414 will gives the highest MV for .243 w/95gr bullet). It is an extreem powder and should alowe you to shoot the same load from 40 to 100 degrees.

Thanks for all of the input guys. Trying to scan a target here...hope it works. I went to the range with some test loads and the Remington Model 788. The load was; new lapua cases, IMR 4350, Nosler 95 gr. ballistic tip, cci 200 primer, seating depth was -.005 from the rifling contact point. Pretty lackluster groups until I hit 43 grains. I have loaded some more test groups; 42,42.5 43,and 43.5 grains of IMR 4350 to test next. Do you think that this group was a fluke?

No, I dont think it is a fluke. The 43g and 44g loads have similar POI with the 42g loads having 2 out of the 3 with similar POI. I think you are on the right track loading again around charges to try to find your node.

I might even load 0.3g charges. I would load 42.3, 42.6, 42.9, 43.2, 43.5, and 43.8g. Chronograph information would also be beneficial to see if you have similar velocities.

Please post when you re-shoot your new loads. I would be interested.
