4198

What is the difference between IMR4198 and Hodgon 4198. Are they comparable, could you use either one with the same powder charge and get the same results ?

i do not believe they are the same, different production, yes they are simular, but not the same. check Hod web load data and see the differance they show.

Didn't tell me anything in regard to burn rate ?
http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php?topic=3749983.0 Data for 223 rem shows H to be slower. Burn rate means nothing, as it changes in different cartridges. Closed bomb tests are how burn rates are classified. This is how i understand it. I am no expert on the subject. Some of H powders are made darker for the US market & given a different number or changed completely. (4895)

This is a good burn rate chart you can save as PDF

IMR4198 is #71
H4198 is #72

As close to the same as you can get. I know the H is an extreme powder supposed to be stable in wide temp changes.
I don't know how the IMR meters compared to H

Dave, Thanks, that answers my question. I just started to shoot a 30 BR and was looking for a little faster powder. I use 8208 in my 6 BR. Just saying, I know 8208 is alot slower than 4198. Bob

Dave, I have about 3# of H4198 at this time. When I find a load that the rifle likes, I will more than likely go back and shoot my 6 BR more than the 30, although I am out of 8208, going to load 322. I have a load I believe the 30 likes and will find out if it does at our next centerfire match in two weeks. It is a case full, pretty close to a compressed load. Thanks again for your info. Bob

Imr4198 has big grains and crunches in the measure. In comparison CFE223 meters great and gives an extra 100 fps in 222 and 223 loads.

the number 71 and 72 say nothing as to the % difference in burn rate only that they are adjacent to each other in the overall rating.

The H-4198 is finer grained than the IMR-4198. But it is still a stick and you will cut a grain from time to time - it looks like a slightly larger version of IMR-8208 XBR, (but it is much faster).

I have never heard anyone use the word "accurate" when talking about CFE - but 4198 is a classic accuracy powder.

In most VFS matches I have been to in the loading list most 30BR shooters I have seen are from 34 Gr to 34.5 of H-4198 with 118 gr bullets and 125, most 118.
