40xbr stock question

Hello folks. I recently tried to remove the butt pad on my Remington 40xbr walnut stock. I removed the two screws and the butt pad is stuck tight! Did they glue and screw those on or has it adhered it's self together over time? Let me know your thoughts.

Matt

P.S. The reason I am wanting to remove the butt pad is, to add weight some how to the butt end of the gun.

Well this morning was the morning. I pulled out the heat gun and went to work. I applied a thick layer of blue tape to the stock in hopes of avoiding damaging the finish. Then I began heating the butt pad aimed at the joint between the wood and the black shiny part of the butt pad. I did my best to evenly heat around the the circumference of the butt end. After about five minutes of heating the bottom tip of the pad pulled loose, but that was it. So I concentrated more on the thicker parts of the pad after that. After a bit the shiny part of the butt pad turned softer, then with some careful razor work i was able to free the pad from the stock. It wasn't a 100% clean pull, but i was pretty pleased. Then to my surprise and relief, there where two holes already drilled in the stock. They measure roughly 7/8" x 5" deep, I'm guessing they did that at the factory? Anyway, this week i will fill the holes up with lead shot and see how it feels. Thank you for the input guys. Oh, the blue tape peeled right off and the finish on the wood was just fine.

Thanks
Matt

I made it to the range today. The extra couple pounds in the rear end made a big difference! Thank you everyone for the help.
