Lots of variations...

the 40x was the first of them, single shot and repeater, they had the "position" stock, sling, adjustable front stock setting. etc. 27"bbl non stainless.

the 40xbr came about in the mid-to late 70s with a shorter stock, shorter bbl, single shot, set up for the BR of the time, later version had multiple changes, but all had the same action - single shot or not

I have the 40 XC-KS which was supposedly
built for the US-AMU. It has the guide for the stripper clips and is marked 7.62 instead of 308.Fine rifle,Tom.

^^^^^ 40-XBBR is definitely not rimfire. That rifle is embellished in my brain as it is the one rifle I wanted badly back in the '80's and it always alluded me. Then I discovered Customs and the urge quickly left me.

It appears Remington can't even produce a catalog without mistakes. Click on the 40-xbbr and it shows a CF. Apparently they don't market the 40-x rimfire anymore. Not only that, but check the copyright date -2011. Can't they update their website for the Custom Shop sooner than 4 years?

My understanding is that the 40x is a production built rifle of higher quality than the 700. The 40x has its model number (40x) rolled into the side of the receiver.

The 40xbr has its model number (40xbr) etched into the side of the receiver (no stess put into the metal while rolling). The 40xbr also was built in Remingtons custom shop.

The above is what I have heard.

40 XBR came with a factory 2 oz trigger.
plus 24 in barrel and special rem. green benchrest stock

There are multiple versions of the 40X.

There are 40X rimfires, both commercial and CMP, as well as sporters in various grades.

There are 40X rifles designed with heavy target stocks (mid 60-70's) in 7.62 with stripper clip relief.

There were 40XB Rangemasters, possibly the most common of the rifles in centerfire, and early on these had a lighter barrel, later a heavier barrel, most 27.5 inches. Very early the 40X was based on the 722 action and had a straight, not swept bolt. Some were CM barrel, but later stainless only.

There were 40XBR in two versions in walnut. One was heavy gun, the other light gun weight. The lighter one had a 20 inch barrel and is most common in 222 or 6x47.

Later the 40X's got a fiberglass stock. Again there are several versions, several weights and configurations.

All said, the 40X action is a 700...most of the time it is a single shot (all XBR were single shot) and they were put together at the custom shop. I have owned several. Every one, especialy the older rangemasters shot exceptionally well, even in walnut. I love them for varmint rifles...cheaper than a custom, usually better than a shelf grade 700, and if you are careful, not "overused".
