40X question

I am to the point where I need to sell some of my rifles.
The one I am thinking of is what I think is a Rem 40X although It is not marked 40X. It is a single shot action. All I can find is a serial number 415XX B. It was rebarreled to 6 x 47.Does this ring any bells to any one here? Thanks

It's a 40X, roughly somewhere in the late 60's-early 70's. No other Remington has a serial number like this except the 40X rimfires and obviously it's a centerfire.

The serial number info indicates late 60's,early 70's so it's not from Remington's closing. I bought this rifle in the late 70's from a Gunsmith/Benchrest shooter who had a terminal illness.. I have also found on some reputable sites that they didn't mark their early rifles 40 X.
This is a quality rifle that shoots. Ascetics is in the eye of the beholder.
The hole in the pic is from an aftermarket bolt stop that was commo in those days. It broke so I put in a factory bolt stop. I may still have the pieces for repair. It never bothered my so I didn't persue it.

So, I think it should be considered a "parts gun". The usual 40X action will go around 6-800. Barrel all depends on who made it, chambering and shape it is in. I generally buy thinking the barrel is worth about $200 unless I KNOW it is basically new, then I want to see bore scope video and targets. If it is good, and in a caliber I want, with the twist I want, from Krieger, Shilen, Hart, Broughton, BArtlein, I will pay about $500 for the barrel on the gun...assuming all the above. That is about $200 less than cost or thereabouts. The stock is another matter. It has to fit the reason for the gun (how I will use it) and it has to be bedded properly or in my mind it is just a part to be sold for cost and I have to consider the cost of replacement/shipping etc and stay in budget. A good Jwell is worth the $2-250 range right now in the BR format, no safety. The ADL trigger is worth about $75 I think.

I would go with the theory it is a 40X that was refinished and the lazer engraved finish is gone. It might be a 40XB or XBR. HArd to know whithout research on the serial. 6x47 is a fun cartridge that has little following anymore.

I would put value at 900-1000 as it sits with no scope. Just my opinion.

If your planning to sell I would definitely fix the old style bolt release. The new owner will certainly appreciate it and it will help you get top dollar for a very nice rifle. The appearance of a rifle is the first thing a potential buyer sees. Which I am sure you are aware of. Good luck.
