40X or 50X march

What is everyone's opinion on which fixed power march to get? I am leaning towards 40X because brightness and contrast are extremely important to me. How much brightness and contrast do you lose when you step up to the 50X?

Could you tell us what type of shooting you intend to use a fixed March scope for? That would go a long way to guiding our replies toward more useful answers.

It would also help if you could describe how and why brightness and contrast are very important to you.

The photometric definitions are: for brightness = luminance (light flux per unit area) emitted or reflected by a source; for contrast = range of luminance highest to lowest (as in contrast ratio). These are attributes of the target not of the scope.

Since you are asking about only the March fixed 40x, 50x and presumably also the 60x, note that all of these share the same design, ED glass, and 52mm objective diameter. Therefore, the question becomes how does magnification alter your perception of brightness and contrast as you define them.

I shoot mostly from 100 to 600 yards. Every now and then when I am at a range where I can go to 1000 I do. I guess my question should have been, how much does the additional 10X magnification cut down on your perception of brightness and contrast? Also, if you can make a suggestion for me I would appreciate it.

I've had the 40, 50 and 60x Marches and they are all superb, but I would HIGHLY recommend spending the extra money to get all of them, at one time, and get the 10-60X. It appears to be better at the same X than the fixed (which was already better than anyone else's) and is the most amazing scope!

I seem to have side stepped your basic question and I am sorry for that. A more direct answer is that I have March 50x and 60x fixed power and if I knew then what I know now I would have bought two 60x.

I have been using Weaver T-36 and still do on lesser rifles. My aging eyes needed help so after all the accolades from competitors about the March scopes and when the 50x and 60x became available I took the plunge.

For the sake of full disclosure I should say that it took me about a month on the 50x and almost two months on the 60x to train my brain and become comfortable with the jump from 36x and the huge leap in image quality.

If we are at least close to a common definition on brightness and contrast, there are several points to consider. First is that you will need some time to train/adapt to the high power and resolution that the March scopes offer. Second is after such train/adapt period you would be hard pressed to detect any significant difference between the powers as to brightness and contrast. Last but not least, the primary loss of brightness and contrast from the target to your eye is not the scope characteristics but far more due to the polluted, hazy and turbulent air between the scope and the target.

I 2nd the above comment about getting the variable, 10-60X March.
That allows you far greater options than a fixed, and there is no price to pay via lack of clarity.
I also have the 8-80X March, but when i buy another, i will get the 10-60X again simply due to the price saving

Frazzle

I am partial to fixed power scopes and for some reason always shoot better groups with them. Just a personal preference. Thanks guys.
